Distance in LOTS

So, with last week's episode, I got to thinking about how the sense of distance seems to work in Legend of the Seeker.

Full thoughts under cut to avoid spoilers. )

Remember the end of last week's episode Richard and Kahlan (who were in the Midlands at the time) got a note from Zedd asking them cryptically to meet him in D'Hara and Kahlan moaned that they would have quite a distance to travel to reach him..like the woods of Morrow or something. Zedd has apparently been wandering all over the Midlands trying to figure out where to hide the box during their time apart and finally he decided to hide the box "in plain sight" of Rahl in a magical location in D'Hara (which is a whole different territory than the Midlands ( ... )

Ok, I apparently missed that detail at the end - I was just so surprised that so much running around could take place in such a small amount of space. Not to mention that Zedd would hide a box so close to Darken Rahl's palace.

It makes perfect sense that Richard and Kahlan were so close. After all- Zedd told them to meet him there. Zedd wouldn't have wandered too far from the box, because if someone did manage to get hold of it, they'd have to be nearby to see the alarm and be able to reach whoever got the box as quickly as possible, while at the same time, maintaining enough distance so they wouldn't lead anyone right to the box.

As for Jennsen's home, I don't think it's all that weird that it's relatively close to the Peoples' Palace. And it's been awhile since I watched the episode, so maybe my memory is faulty, but it didn't seem like it was terribly clear just how long Denna and Jennsen traveled.

I had completely forgotten Zedd told them to meet him there - oops!

Maybe I'm having trouble translating that everything on the show seems to happen so "quickly," yet in the books they literally take weeks and months to go from place to place. The show makes D'Hara seem so much smaller.

Yeah, I understand the feeling, but I think it's mostly just because the book often specifies the time it takes the characters to go place to place. In the show, we don't even get hints really. Because really, there could pretty easily be months between episodes and not just a week, or even a couple of weeks.

I don't think the writers necessarily are thinking about this - but here's the map that they have in the books for how the territories are laid out in the Sword of Truth books. For Conversion they were at Tamorang - so you'll see the "great distance" that they had to travel from there to get to D'Hara and the People's Palace.

And Kahlan is faster than a horse so they might have some powers that allow them to travel quicker than us regular folks.

I actually made a similar comment after this last episode. The lack of time references has been bugging me for a while. Back in Elixir there was a comment about it being a month or so (I think) since they left Hartland. Since then I don't think there has been a single reference to how long they've been gone. By the time Sacrifice takes place we can guess that it's been about six months since they left Harland since Denee obviously wasn't too far along in her pregnancy when she was with Kahlan. But that is only a guess/estimate since nothing is stated. =_ ( ... )

what works is that the landscape really changes as they "journey" to these locations. after conversion we saw sorta the valley landscape and now we are back to the wooded areas..

also, i think its more believable if all these events take place within days or weeks of each other unlike shows like 24 which occurs in "real time" and all this stuff happens in a matter of minutes.
