2009 Fic Retrospective

Jan 06, 2010 23:20

This is an exercise in self-indulgence and navel-gazing: a summary of all the fic I posted to my LJ in 2009, with a little blurb about each-what I liked about them, what I didn’t like, why I was thinking when I wrote them, how I feel about them now, etc. Just whatever takes my fancy, really.

writing, fanfic, torchwood, doctor who, fic retrospective, merlin, harry potter, nero wolfe, sarah jane adventures, malory towers

I feel pretty damned good about making you write more smut. :D

My favourites of yours are probably Comfort and Standing In. I like your Jack/Ianto fic, of course, but EVERYBODY WRITES JACK/IANTO FIC and I have a bias towards well-written Gwen stuff. I really do.

Yeah, I have a feeling that those fics are better than my J/I stuff too, simply because writing pairings that I don't usually write forces me to be more careful, to think about exactly what I'm trying to say and how I'm trying to say it. When writing J/I, it's easier to slip into "automatic" mode.

I just wanted to say how much I've enjoyed reading your fics. I can't say much more than that because my brain's still waking up.

I'm sorry that COE ruined your J/I fun though. I'd like to say it changed my view, but I didn't really understand what was going on before and COE didn't exactly provide much clarity. Hey, maybe the show was consistent after all.

Look forward to reading what you come up with in 2010.

For me, it was because in CoE, Jack only showed Ianto any sort of affection whatsoever when he was facing immanent death-- in Day One, when he basically just wants Ianto to shut up and stop struggling, and in Day Four, when he's suddenly overcome with guilt. The rest of the time, as I see it, Jack's feelings for Ianto seemed to vacillate between disdain (the expression on his face when Ianto hugged him, not thanking him for saving him from concrete/getting him a new coat, sitting on the opposite side of the couch) and very mild fondness ( ... )

I like that reading of CoE, although I don't know if I can share it just now. :) I think, for me, it seemed like their relationship had regressed in CoE -- they seemed much more awkward around each other and much less close (Ianto didn't even seem to be sure of whether or not Jack would outlive him, over the course of a natural lifespan). I think perhaps, I'd have been more inclined to view the distance between them as a new stage in their relationship if that had actually been explored properly, rather than just inserting a couple of really out-of-place and contradictory "are we a couple" conversations in Day One, which were then never picked up on again in the following episodes.

I loved Salt Water. It was just tonally absolutely perfect. Real treat to read.

Thank you -- I'm very proud of that fic. Of everything I wrote this year, that's the one that really sticks with me.

And, of course, your betaing was an essential part of that. :)

I know it's painful, but I'm really glad that you do see J/I in a way that's closer to my vision now, and I especially love the fics that reflect that.

I think that, at the very least, changing my perspective on J/I has improved my writing simply because I need to think about it more.

Thank you. And thank you too for taking the time to leave thoughtful comments and concrit on so many of my fics -- I really appreciate that even if we don't always agree. :)
