Your October challenge

Oct 09, 2006 18:51

deardeedle posted a challenge to her friends to join her in her goal to run at least 20 minutes a day, five times a week, for the rest of the month. I've been on a gym-break for about a month now, and this is just about the best darn idea I've ever seen.

So, come join the cool kids and do a bit each day!

ww, exercise, deardeedle

I like these lj-challenges. Using defenestration, running five times a day.

Unfortunately working out three times a week is a -huge- challenge to me. Why? Because I'm a wimp. Nothing more to it than that.

I totally hear ya :] I figured if I started this challange it would be easier to talk myself into this on a regular basis - as I wouldn't want to fail my own challage. Really - it started off as a very selfish idea.

I too am a wimp with the consistancy end of excersize.

That's a lot of running! I started a marathon training program over the summer (I quit when my back bothered me). My advice: start by walking for 2 minutes and then jogging for 1 minute... walk 2, jog 1, continue for 20 minutes. Then build up from there. After a few weeks, the most continuous jogging I could do was about 5 minutes.

That's been my running style my whole life! I've done triathlons, and I have never run more than a mile or so at once without walking.

How about brisk walking? My philosophy is a person shouldn't run unless she's being chased by an axe murderer. Or the police.

Oh yeah, I definitely plan to do some walk/run sessions. I think walking counts just fine.

"There's only one reason to run, if you're being chased or if you're on fire. Otherwise it's dumb."

"Every day I see the same guy running around the track at the high school. His dog just sits there and watches him. One of them's running, one of them's not. The one who's not gets his poop picked up by the other one. You tell me who's smarter."

-- Both are quotes from Ted Danson on Becker. Man, that show was great.

Walking is actually better for you than running, unless you want cardiovascular strength. Walking the same distance has been proven to burn the exact same amount of calories without doing as much damage to your joints, but it takes longer.

I've lived by that walking = running over the same length fact for a loooong time now. I hate running. I have done triathlons and never run the whole 5 miles or whatever (spint triathlons). Running is bad, bad, bad for your joints. I plan to count walking and other cardio in my 20 minutes.
