Supernatural and the Underclass 3- Music

Part 1- Intro
Part 2- Dangers of Underclass

If I were to start by using one thing, I would point out the music. American rock oldies, you say. Yeah, okay, big deal. Yes,  very American, so what's your point? The point belongs to that of a generational divide that, unless you are someone born in  the 50s, or ( Read more... )

First of all, let me just say that you are brilliant. Your ability to synthesize and clearly state your argument is extremely impressive. I have a phD (fat lot of good it does me, but it was a goal I achieved) and I've worked editing the writing of college professors, and so I have a basis of comparison to say, you are a great writer and very persuasive. :D ( ... )

I've gotta say that I am really deeply flattered. I'm always worried that my thoughts are too fragmented to make any real flow, so I am both elated and relieved that my meta is so effective. Thank you so much ( ... )

I think I'm one of the only people in my generation online that knows that song. Or the only person I'm aware of. I'm 23, and yet I'm conversing as comfortably with people who could conceivably be my parents as though I were talking to someone my age about Greenday or something. I find this strange, but not bad.

It's definitely an experience, I'll say for sure. There are some really awesome things and some really dismaying things.

So have you listened to Kripke's rationale for choosing that car, that music? ;) This carries straight on and past that..This was American music's time, and it carried that new awareness overseas, too- I'm reminded of The Commitments, movie about a wannabe blues band in Ireland, because "it's the music of the downtrodden, and the Irish have always been that", they said. ;D ( ... )

sorry- I mean enonomic and social strata, because as you said, the genders and the professions are part of the exclusion process.

I have something like 50 years of American history knocking around inside my head simply by virtue of being 23 and living with parents in their mid 50s. It's definitely interesting, sometimes ( ... )

But whites are the majority, can't be underprivileged! (But we all want a place in a hierarchy, so when one group is all you have, some of them must be less, so the others can be more. None of us live in the whole nation, we all live in discrete communities that don't have a whole range of groups to look down on ( ... )

I started getting into classic rock because of SPN. I'm from an immigrant family, so while I know about the Vietnam War from US history class, I learned very little about the cultural role of rock other than it being "part of the counterculture" (idk?).

I did not know O Death was originally an Appalachia folk song! That's a really interesting observation about Death "brushing off" the man who died--to that man, death isn't so easily understandable. Good food for thought.

Once I got into classic rock I started expanding to the old-style folk music--I LOVE House of the Rising Sun. There's a compilation by the Library of Congress, Anthology of American Folk Music, which you might be interested in here (also, this and this).

I'll say it again, but I'm really glad that I've been able to use my experiences for the forces of good to help people understand a part of American culture, especially since it's such an intrinsic part of the show, a little better.

Yeah, you'll find a lot, and I mean a LOT, of songs in the classic category that are based off of older songs.

Holy crap, thank you so much for the links! I have been looking for those versions for forever! Hell, yes.

I've been reading all your metas and finding them all fascinating. As a non-American a lot of this stuff is completely new to me and really interesting. However, as a big fan of 60's/70's rock and a Brit, I couldn't stop myself from commenting on your usage of the term "American rock" to describe the kind of classic rock on the show, so I really hope you don't mind ( ... )

I'd love to hear other similar Appalachian recordings, so yes, if you wouldn't mind linking, I would definitely listen!

Okay so I've done a quick and dirty recording of the way I learned it. Caveat: there's a lot of crappy breath support, crappy terminal diction, and more than once I'm flat or slid off some notes. But my voice is shot from yelling at 100+ highschoolers all day, so mea culpa. Also typing near the mic at the end. D:

Here it is:
