Coastal path day 3

May 07, 2018 16:31

Too Hot today. I was very relieved to open my door and be able to down a pint of cold water and leap into the shower. 17 miles of coastal path today, plus two thirds of a mile to home.

Desolate beaches and annoying estuaries )

diary, photos, vectis, walking

Great photos again! I especially like the tall and twisty trees! And photo no. 6 is right up my street, just the sort of photo I like to try (but usually fail) to take myself! Twisty tree branches are so interesting!

Not only an underwater archaeological site, but an underwater archaeological site discovered by a lobster!

From my fairly small knowledge of lemurs (Edinburgh Zoo has quite a lot of them), I do not think they would stay in a field.

It is confusing enough when a new town is old, but even worse if it isn't there at all. On a related note, where is the old port which Newport is replacing?

I only skimmed it yesterday, and missed the bit about it being discovered by a lobster. :-D I hope they compensated it by building it a wonderful new home, since they rudely went and did archaeological excavations in his old one.

I don't think there actually was an Old Port that Newport replaced. It seems to have been called Newport since Norman times, when the town got its charter - although there was definitely previous settlement in the area. Newtown also wasn't new, since it already existed under the name of Francheville before they changed its name to Newtown. Clearly Isle of Wight Normans liked labelling their new possessions as New despite the fact that they weren't actually new at all.
