Word!

And I feel like I should give more than a one-word comment, but "word!" pretty much sums up my sentiments.

Your comments about sexuality particularly struck home. So so sick of people assuming that when I say bi I mean "straight but I'm pretty and you're pretty so lets be pretty and check out guys" or worse yet "You're just being indecisive, go get yourself a boyfriend" (not my mother's exact words but it was implied).

*punches air and seconds Tomato* Word.

Sheesh, yeah, there seem to be a lot of misconceptions out there. It is both saddening and irritating. I see enough of it as an observer to realise how messed up all those mistaken beliefs are, I can only vaguely imagine the aggravation of dealing with them full-time.

Oh lord, don't get me started on the lesbian idea that we're all evil cheating sluts, assuming we aren't just faking it to attract boys or something. It's bad enough coming from straight people, but hello, lesbians, you KNOW what it's like to have people discriminate against your sexuality!

WTF is "ranga"? I've never even heard that slur.

Ranga means red hair. It's Australian slang.

Seconding the 'word'-ness. Especially on the comments about height, genderqueer and sexuality. I am fed up to the back teeth with being treated like I'm somehow less of a person because I don't fit into the 'normal' perceptions of gender, or because I'm attracted to girls as much as, if not more than, boys.

So yes, much WORD!

Ugh. Everyone knows the only good reason to be called less of a person is liking rap music, anyway. :p

Hehe.... I started out just annoyed at the TV thing, and then it sort of snowballed into a whole big rant about lots of other issues. Worth the extra typing though, since I think those things had to be said.

Growing up, one of my dearest friends in high school was That Girl - the one who, no matter what she ate or how much, stayed rangy, tiny thin. And of course the rumors went around that she was anorexic, blah blah blah, and it really hurt her. So I've been more cautious about thin hate since then, more aware that it isn't just people like me who are made to suffer for not fitting the ridiculous set of unmeetable ideals that go along with being a girl.

One of the guys at my school figured the best way to get out of a question was with an insult.
He was paying me out, of all things, because my shirt had a very tiny pocket. One of the other girls asked "Why were you even looking to notice?"
His reply? "Because there's nothing there."
Mmm, yes, thanks so much for staring at and then criticising my chest. Reeeeal classy.

Hate to break it to you, but we're not going to get rid of sexism until men can get knocked up.

I'd also take issue, re: that advert, with the implication that all "real" women require supportive undergarments. Newsflash! Having a massive arse and a big wibbly stomach does not stop you from getting laid! It simply makes you slightly less likely to end up shagging someone really shallow. All women are real, whether they choose to believe the media's interpretation of the ideal female form is the One True Path or not.

Not much fits my shape either. Because I am small and thin, women's clothing is either too long, or too big because there are places phasing out my size because "nobody is that small anymore". Because I have hips, waist and chest, children's clothing is the wrong shape for me...not to mention how demeaning it is to have to shop in the kid's section just because I don't fit the norm.
I'm just glad my mother is good at sewing, because she regularly gets to fix shirts and pants that are utterly too long for me.
