And then he crushed his stepmother's skull with a millstone, avenging himself so that he could live among humankind once more.

[She finishes her gruesome tale with a smile, a group of horrified children staring up at her.]

[Though hanging back and not standing among the children themselves, Sephiroth has been quietly listening to her story as well, though he is not horrified.]

[We found her a costume this morning. Christine is still smiling easily when she looks up and notices Sephiroth, her expression dulls a little, not out of displeasure but out of distraction. She pushes up off the rock she had seated herself on, coming to greet him.]

So here he is in person, how imposing.

Good evening.

[Sephiroth has no costume, dressed in his usual garb.]

I enjoyed your tale.

[Without asking, she reaches out the touch his hair, toying one of the long ends with her fingertips.]

The Juniper Tree, it's an old one that is not shared so often with children these days.

[He ignores her touching his hair, for now.]

I wasn't told any such tales as a child. [Others' childhoods are alien to him, interesting, which was part of the reason he was drawn to the story and the children listening.] Some may wish to spare their children tales of death and violence. [He doesn't see why; they're parts of life.]

It's pointless censorship and it fosters weak-willed children.

[Then again, she had grown up with her father treating zombie prostitutes while his despondent zombie wife descended into flesh hungry madness...]

But perhaps no stories at all could be nearly as detrimental. They should introduce new ideas and imagination.

I agree, children shouldn't be spared unpleasant truths.

Perhaps you're right, but the fact remains, I was not told stories. Little to be done about it now.

[He'd grown up with his father, which was a problem in and of itself. He wasn't supposed to know who his father was, but he was more intelligent than Hojo.]

Except to tell you stories.

[She smiles absentmindedly, something about her manner suggests she is... not quite convinced about that.]

Still time to grow... and change... blossoming.

I doubt they'd have the same effect on me they have on children. I've passed through my formative years.

Though adults do change as well.

I think you will be quite beautiful in your high summer.

[A scorching blight, withering all that comes near. She wonders what she would see if she were allowed to read his palms.]

But perhaps you will excel at anything set before you.

My high summer? And when will that be? [He's amused by her colorful speech]

I have always excelled. [A simple statement of fact. He doesn't say that he always will, because he's not particularly optimistic about the future at the moment.]

The brighter to star, the shorter the life. Perhaps it will be soon.

Perhaps you're right. [He doesn't argue with this, not after what he saw happen to his friends. He does feel odd--almost fey--these days.] I won't know while I remain here.

You think your star is frozen, merely because it has been relocated?

I believe this is a single, long dream for me. What my mirror shows does not alter.

What happens here will likely not affect my waking life, so yes, that is what I think.
