Two weekends ago: Dinner at Journeyman (fantastic) with DJ and Zach (sp?) (DJ's friend), BarCamp Boston (I did go to the second day after all).

One weekend ago: Saw The Dark Crystal (there are many good thing about this movie, but that doesn't change the fact that it's overall pretty terrible) and Labyrinth (awesome) at the Brattle Theater. ( Read more... )

Is your complaint about Dark Crystal just the datedness, or something more fundamental? I haven't seen it for eight years or so, but I liked it at the time. Hmm, though actually, I do vaguely recall something racism-y...

If you end up needing a new housemate, let me know; I have some friends who are probably going to be in the market around then.

I thought the world-building in Dark Crystal was great, but the main characters and plot didn't show the same creativity. I thought the scene with the orrery was emblematic: It shows this absolutely beautiful set-piece and then cuts away to a reaction shot from a puppet with virtually no facial expression (or other body-language, for that matter). I joked that if they removed the main characters and plot and added another hour of puppet nature documentary, that would have been an improvement.

I'll keep that in mind if DJ's friend doesn't take us up on that. We're supposed to know before the end of the month.
