Yamada Ryosuke dragged his heavy suitcases; they were all that were left of his previous life before Kurogin. A battered laptop, pictures of his precious baby sister Kizuna who was now a first year junior high school student and his beloved grandparents who raised him. Ojichan had died last Christmas and told him it was okay to follow his own path. He stared at the map in his hand and tried to make sense of it.
He heard a laughing voice call out, “Are you lost…”
He nodded, “Yamada Ryosuke desu, I’m trying to find my way to my dorm.”
The older boy grinned, “Oh one of my boys, Nishikido Ryo desu. I’m your dormhead. Follow me I think I saw your roommate earlier. He invited some of the other students over for snacks and to play Wii. His name is Chinen Yuri I believe.”
Chinen Yuri…roommate…oh yeah he’d seen that name on his dorm room assignment. He attempted a nervous smile; “Thanks Nishikido-sempai…” the place was so big; he’d get lost for a while.
He followed the other boy towards his new room that was to be his home for next three years. He dragged his suitcases along, he hoped he make some friends soon. He was tired of being alone…
He heard laughter as they entered the dorm; they followed the sound to his room. There were a few boys already there. It was the smallest one that caught his attention…
Nishikido sempai called out, “Chii-kun, why don’t you help Yama-chan take his bag up to the loft since you didn’t pick that bed.”
The boy grinned and his heart caught in his throat.
“Chinen Yuri desu, yoroshiku I hope we get along well…”
Ryosuke turned red; he’d been staring, “Yamada Ryosuke desu yoroshiku onegaishimasu.”
The boy grabbed his bags from him and carried them up the short steps to his part of the room, the loft. He followed him, he wasn’t great at meeting new people and there were so many people…
Chii must have noticed he was nervous and left for a while before coming back with a slice of strawberry cake and a strawberry-lime soda. He grinned, “Arigatou. I love strawberries…”
“You had a long trip I expect, come down when you’re ready. There is more cake and soda. I had mom’s secretary send over a lot of snacks and all of my games. I hope we’ll be good friends. You seem like a nice guy…”
Ryosuke blushed, “I’ll come down after a bit…”
“Hai, I’ll be waiting…”
That was how they met, a smile and a gentle presence that made him forget his fears for a while maybe it wouldn’t be so bad here. He was glad he’d listened to ojichan…
