And what you wish for could come true
You aren't surprised love, are you?
-Guster, What You Wish For
Chapter Eight
One day near the end of their journey, the five travelers had a very good day. The world they had landed in had no feather, but the inhabitants were very friendly. Since they’d had a difficult time in the previous world recovering Sakura’s feather, they decided to take a day off and enjoy this world, and get a good night’s rest before they went on.
They all knew the next world was likely to be harder, not easier, than the last.
A few hours later, while they were having dinner in the town square, there was a loud “BOOM!” that shook the earth and a rip opened in the sky. A feather floated down out of the rip.
Even Syaoran was too stunned to react immediately, but he caught the feather before it hit the ground (or anyone else could get it), and gave it to Sakura.
Sakura was much stronger by then; happier, healthier, vibrant and energetic, and now she only had a strong spell of dizziness when the feathers came back to her. It had been a long time since she’d had one of those too-still sleeps that made you want to keep your fingers on her pulse just to be sure that she was still alive.
Syaoran was happier too. With every feather he returned, Sakura was closer to being the girl he loved. Not that Syaoran had ever not loved her, not for a second. But Syaoran was starting to finally realize that just because she had lost his memory, that did not mean that he had lost her.
Syaoran was starting to realize that even though he had lost a past with Sakura, he could still have a future with Sakura.
Mokona was Mokona, and Mokona was happy when everyone else was happy.
It was a simple, perfect kind of existence that Fai was envious of.
Kurogane was, after all, Kurogane. And while at first glance he might seem pretty simple to figure out, Fai knew Kurogane was much more complicated than he let show. It was really quite hard to tell what Kurogane was thinking. It was not easy to gauge whether or not he was happy.
Out of all of them, Fai knew Kurogane the best. But he would still never claim to have the ninja figured out. Kurogane still managed to surprise him.
Out of all of them, Fai knew that Kurogane knew him the best. Kurogane was the only one who would ask him the questions he did not want to answer, the only one who saw him at those moments when he did not want anyone to see him. Kurogane was the only one who wanted to know what was on the other side of his smile.
But at least, as Fai watched Sakura holding Kurogane’s hands and twirling around him with the music, with Syaoran and Mokona laughing as they watched, at this moment Fai was sure that Kurogane was happy.
And that made Fai happy.
After a good meal, good wine, an hour or two of music and dancing, Syaoran and Sakura and Mokona were ready for a good night’s sleep.
After a good shag, Fai and Kurogane were too.
But instead of sleep, Fai laid quietly next to Kurogane, half-awake. He knew that their time together would be ending soon. Moments like these were rare and precious, moments when he was happy. He did not want to waste it by sleeping.
Kurogane was not asleep either.
Fai would not ask if Kurogane had the same kind of thoughts as he did. Fai would not ask if Kurogane was happy too.

“Old McKuro had a farm, e i e i o
And on this farm he had a big puppy, e i e i o
With a woof-woof here
And a woof-woof there
Here a woof, there a woof, everywhere a woof-woof
Old McKuro had a farm, e i e i o!”
Fai was singing. It must be a song from his native language, Kurogane guessed, because to him it sounded like musical nonsense punctuated by animal sounds.
“What are you doing?” he asked Fai’s rear, which was currently in the air.
Fai leaned back and looked over his shoulder, offering a bright grin. “I am washing the floor! Silly Kuro-pon, what does it look like I am doing?”
“It looks like you’re having too much fun.”
“Should I not be?”
“I wouldn’t.” Kurogane said, leaning one shoulder against the wall.
“Hm. I would not have guessed that I would enjoy it as much as I do.” Fai stretched with a self-satisfied sigh, back arched and arms over his head. “But I have found, there is something quite rewarding about manual labor. It is honest.” He grinned and looked at his arms. “And sweaty. At the end of the day I can look at what I have done and say, ‘I did a good job.’ I like that.”
“The floor will just get dirty again tomorrow.”
“Yes! Is it not wonderful?”
“Excuse me.” Kurogane started to walk down the hall. “I have to go find some sane people.”
“Be careful!” Fai warned. “This soap I made is very slippery until it-oooff!”
Kurogane looked down at Fai from where he had landed on top of the mage. His first thought was that he should want to move. His second thought was that he did not want to move.
“Oh. Hello.” Fai smiled up at him, apparently completely unbothered by their current position. “Are you comfortable?” His arms slid up over Kurogane’s shoulders, hands in dark hair on the pretense of searching for a bump. “Or did Kuro-tan hit his head?”
Kurogane grabbed Fai’s wrists and stretched his arms up over his head. Fai bit his lip and lifted his chin slowly toward Kurogane, hooded blue eyes staring up into his without a trace of anything like hesitation.
This. Now, this felt right.
Kurogane lowered his head and paused for the space of a breath before he kissed the mage. Fai squirmed against him in a manner that meant he definitely did not want Kurogane to stop.
Kurogane had no intention of stopping.
“I am not trying to run away,” Fai gasped.
Kurogane realized he still had a hold of the mage’s wrists. He released them and slim arms went around him, one hand buried in black hair.
They kissed slowly at first, lips soft against lips. Hands wandered without haste; tongues touched, tasting each other. But passion soon won out.
Kurogane rolled them over so that Fai was straddling him and he could get his hands into the other man’s tunic.
This was much better. Infinitely better.
“But ... Kuro ...” Fai murmured between kisses. “... here ...?”
Kurogane growled as he remembered they were still in the hallway-one of the most frequently used hallways of the palace. This was something he did not want to be interrupted.
“Dammit.”
He stood and yanked Fai up to his feet too. And the fact that Fai seemed only too happy and willing to be pushed around a little made Kurogane unable to stop himself from pinning him against the wall and kissing him again, more fiercely than before. Kurogane pressed and felt the slender body yield to him, narrow chest and thin shoulders and flat stomach and the curve of hips fitting to the sharper, more angular definitions of his own body.
Accepting, welcoming.
Fai’s legs were wrapped around his waist and Fai’s tongue was in his mouth and this was what he had been missing.
Fai banged on his shoulder with a fist and Kurogane extracted his tongue from its exploration inside the mage’s mouth.
“What?”
“Room.” Fai muttered breathlessly. “Yours. Or mine. Closest.”
“Right.”
But Kurogane did not get very far, before he was too involved in kissing Fai again. Fai broke his mouth away and tugged sharply on black hair. Kurogane responded by running the edges of his teeth over the smooth skin of Fai’s neck, which elicited a sound he really liked.
“Do I-” Fai took a heavy breath and kissed the ninja’s neck, “have to stop kissing you-” His lips moved against Kurogane’s ear, “for us to get anywhere?”
“Don’t you dare.”
“Well-” Fai’s teeth nipped at his ear, followed by a soothing tongue. “I would like for us to have sex-”
Kurogane growled, picked the magician up by the waist, and threw him over his shoulder. He started for his room at a very quick pace.
“Oh, nice view!” Fai reached down and grabbed his ass.
Kurogane smacked Fai’s rear. “Stop that.”
“Ow!” Fai exclaimed, feigning injury. “Kuro-coo is mean.”
When they were not much farther from their rooms and Kurogane was relatively sure they would not be seen by anyone, he reached up with a gentle hand and rubbed the place he had smacked.
Over his shoulder, unseen, Fai smiled.
Once inside Kurogane’s room with the door locked, Fai slithered down off his shoulder.
The two men stood close to each other, hesitation unspoken in the air between them.
Fai moved first, reaching with chaste hands for the buttons at the side of Kurogane’s uniform. His fingers worked at the buttons, quick and efficient, and the garment slid from the ninja’s shoulders with a low rustle of cloth. Fai stepped closer, placing a chaste kiss above Kurogane’s heart as if it was a gift.
Kurogane ran his hands through blond hair, pushing it back out of the other man’s eyes. Then he cupped a pale cheek in his tanned hand. Fai looked up into his eyes and smiled a small, honest smile.
Fai leaned in again and kissed his neck, lips lingering, while his long fingers began the task of undoing Kurogane’s belt. He stayed with his face tucked into the curve of Kurogane’s neck, breathing him in, while Kurogane loosed the ties of the mage’s tunic with his hands. Fai stretched up onto his toes and kissed Kurogane on the cheek, as the cloth of his tunic fell to the floor and pooled beside the ninja’s discarded clothing.
Fai made a small choked noise, and Kurogane realized he was trying not to laugh.
“It’s not a good idea to laugh at a naked man you’re about to have sex with.” Kurogane remarked conversationally, curious but not offended. “Especially if that man is a ninja with a big sword.”
Fai giggled. “I am not laughing at you. Or your big sword.”
Kurogane ran a hand over pale, naked skin. “Then what’s so damn funny?”
Fai shrugged and waved a hand, communicating ineffectually. “Is it not?”
“Yeah, I guess.”
Kurogane closed a large hand around one thin wrist, leading Fai through the beam of afternoon sunlight slanting in through the window, and over to the bed. Kurogane turned and kissed him again, a long, slow, intimate kiss that neither of them wanted to end. Fai’s hands wandered a slow path over Kurogane’s strong arms and shoulders, down the muscles of his chest and stomach.
“Want ...”
“Yes ...”
Kurogane leaned down and licked a warm wet stripe up the magician’s pale neck. Fai shivered and stretched up onto his toes to accommodate for their difference in height. Kurogane’s mouth made its way down Fai’s chest with gentle kisses, pausing at a nipple to apply a teasing tongue.
Fai drew in a sharp breath when Kurogane kissed the plane of skin just under his navel. He had always been especially sensitive there, something Kurogane had been quick to discover and subsequently exploit in Yama.
And it turned out that some things were still the same.
Kurogane sat down on the edge of the bed, pulled Fai over to stand between his thighs, and set to work on the buttons of Fai’s trousers. Long fingers threaded through the ninja’s hair, playing with the spiky black strands.
“Kurogane ...”
Kurogane looked up to see an indescribable look on Fai’s face (warm and gentle and happy and passionate and content and possessive and honest and beautiful all at once), and when Fai smiled, Kurogane found an unexpected happiness in that smile.
Fai’s trousers fell to the floor.
Kurogane took a moment to appreciate slender form in front of him. Fai might look soft, but his body was hard in all the right places.
Kurogane lowered his head and licked once more the stretch of skin below the wizard’s bellybutton, before he opened his mouth and took the head of Fai’s cock (which was longer than his own, he thought, but not quite as thick) inside, sucking lightly and lazily. His tongue curled and stroked around the shaft, as he learned Fai’s taste and Fai’s sounds.
Kurogane continued this avid attention until the other man was clutching at his shoulders and making wonderfully indecent sounds that made Kurogane’s erection throb.
“Kuro-please no ...”
In confusion, Kurogane released Fai. “What?”
Fai’s knees hit the floor with a thump that must have hurt. Then a hot mouth enveloped Kurogane’s length and a talented tongue swirled around the head of his cock. Kurogane leaned back on his elbows so he could watch the way Fai’s lips wrapped around him.
Kurogane groaned low in his throat; the beautiful sight of Fai sucking him combined with the amazing feeling of Fai sucking him was incredible.
Fai seemed to be taking as much pleasure out of this as he was giving Kurogane. Fai was truly enjoying himself, which intensified the pleasure pulsing through Kurogane’s body to an almost unbearable point.
“Come here,” Kurogane growled, pulling the blond man up onto the bed with him.
Fai stretched out on top of Kurogane, fitting their skins together, their cocks aligned pleasantly between them. Hips moved, grinding slowly against each other.
“Do you have ...” Fai murmured, dropping soft kisses over Kurogane’s mouth, his cheeks, his jaw.
Kurogane caught the mage’s lips with his own; a longer kiss. “No.”
“I have. I could ...” he offered, but his body made no effort to pull away.
“No.”
“But-”
“No.” The ninja’s hands were possessive on Fai’s back, pressing him closer. “Stay.”
“Be quick-”
“No.” Kurogane rolled them over, trapping the wizard underneath his weight. “Stay.” Red eyes burned down into blue. “Want you. Here, now.”
“I am not going anywhere.” Fai promised solemnly.
“Good.” Kurogane smiled. “Shut up.”
Fai laughed softly. “Who could resist Kuro-li’s sweet talk ...?”
Kurogane’s mouth captured Fai’s again, tongue seeking entrance, and Fai opened willingly. Fai’s arms slid around the ninja’s sides, his hands grasping onto broad shoulders and holding on tightly. Kurogane reached down between their bodies and gripped their cocks in his large hand, stroking them both with a steady rhythm.
Fai whimpered, “Kurogane ...!” and his thighs spread further apart. One leg draped over Kurogane’s thigh so that the back of his ankle was rubbing intimately against the back of a muscled thigh.
“I like it when you say my name ...” Kurogane murmured, his voice a low and rough and lusty rumble in Fai’s ear. His hand quickened its strokes. He whispered, “... Fai.”
Fai drew in a sharp breath and moaned as he came, his hips thrusting up into Kurogane’s hand.
Kurogane slowed his ministrations but did not stop, letting the blond ride out the orgasm and come down slowly. He kissed the magician’s neck, his slack mouth, his jaw, and listened to the sound of harsh breathing.
“You-” Fai mumbled.
He batted the ninja’s hand away from between their bodies and took Kurogane’s still-hard member into his smaller, slender hand. He squeezed and stroked with a firm, steady touch, and Kurogane growled his appreciation.
“Come-” Fai’s hand moved faster, gripping tighter. “-for me ... Kurogane ...”
Kurogane’s face twisted into a horrible expression of ecstacy and Fai had never seen anything more beautiful.
When Kurogane’s breathing slowed, he opened his eyes.
Blue eyes smiled up into red. “Hi.”
“Hello.” Kurogane lowered his head and gave Fai a kiss. And another kiss. “I should-”
Fai grabbed onto him. “No.”
“I’m heavy.”
“Nooo.” Fai protested, trying to pull Kurogane’s weight onto him again. “You feel good.”
Kurogane arched an eyebrow. “We feel sticky.”
“Sticky!” Fai laughed. His arms and legs slithered around Kurogane like tentacles, locking tight to keep him close. “I am sticky. I am going to stick to you ...”
Fai looked like he wanted to say something more, but he did not.
Kurogane nodded, accepting that fact and not unhappy about it. “I’m sure of that.”
“Be sure of me, yes?” Fai added, soft and serious.
“I am sure of you.”
Kurogane rolled them over so that Fai was on top of him again. The two kissed again, slow and languid, and Kurogane’s mouth opened to let Fai’s curious tongue inside. Large hands were resting easily at the mage’s hips, and one set of Fai’s toes were rubbing slowly against a tanned ankle.
One large, rough hand slipped down, following the smooth curve of Fai’s arse, and squeezed.
Fai grinned against Kurogane’s mouth. “Naughty.”

The body remembers too.
Even when the mind forgets, the body remembers.
Kurogane remembered Mokona saying that, once.
The body remembers.

“Why do you feel so familiar to me?” Kurogane asked quietly, a lazy thumb stirring blond hair. “I feel that, when you smile that stupid smile of yours. I feel that, when I yell at you over those idiotic nick-names. I feel that very strongly when we’re fighting together.” He paused. “And just now, when we were ...”
“... having sex?”
“I felt it the strongest I ever have.”
Fai was quiet. What could he say that would not be a lie?
Kurogane sighed heavily, then got up from the bed. He grabbed his shirt from the floor and used it to wipe his stomach. Then he sat back down on the bed, offering it to Fai.
Fai wiped at his stomach absently, thinking. He had to say something, and he did not want to lie. He wanted, desperately, to help Kurogane find a peace with this.
Fai sat next to Kurogane, close so that their thighs were pressed together, pale contrasting against tan. He wrapped both his arms around one of the ninja’s strong arms, hugging it, and dropped his head onto Kurogane’s shoulder.
“You know of reincarnation. Different dimensions, same soul.”
“Yes.”
“Perhaps our souls have been entwined countless times on countless worlds. Perhaps that is what you feel.”
Kurogane gave a grunt that was almost a laugh. “How romantic.”
Fai smiled. “It is just a theory.”
“Is that how it is for you?” he asked, laying a warm hand on a pale thigh. “You feel like you knew me in another life?”
“Very like that, yes.”
“Fine. I’m done thinking about it.” Kurogane decided. He fell back onto the bed. “It’s annoying.”
Fai looked over his shoulder with a wicked smile. “It annoys Kuro-chan to have thoughts?”
“Shut up.” Kurogane grabbed onto Fai’s arm and tugged. “Come here.”
“Mmm ...” But Fai suddenly pulled away. “Oh! The floor!” he exclaimed, attempting to twist free from the ninja’s hands.
“What-?”
“The floor! I left the bucket and the soap and everything!”
Kurogane did not care. He did not release Fai, keeping the mage on the bed with him.
“No, seriously,” Fai protested. “I have to go. The floor-!”
Kurogane yanked him down and into a kiss. “Will still be there in an hour or two.” he pointed out, his hands roaming to interesting places.
Fai squirmed against him, the movement sensual this time. It was very, very tempting to just stay right where he was ...
“Kuro-sama, encouraging me to shirk my duties?” He smacked a light hand against Kurogane’s arse, quite enjoying the resulting sound. “Bad ninja.”
“Oh, you are asking for it.”
“Yes, I am.” Fai kissed him once, quickly. “But not right now.”
Fai finally managed to get loose. Kurogane sat up and watched him quickly throw on his rumpled clothes. Kurogane thought he looked much better naked.
“When?”
“Hm?” Fai returned, distracted by the buttons on his trousers.
Kurogane lunged forward and grabbed Fai by the waist, pulling him close. He looked up into clear blue eyes, his thumbs finding the dip where pelvis met thigh, rubbing.
“When?” Kurogane repeated.
Fai bit his lip and stared down into eyes that were glittering like rubies. He ran an idle hand over a muscled shoulder. “I have Guard duty tonight ...” he said, regretfully.
Kurogane pressed his lips to the smooth skin under Fai’s bellybutton. “After.”
“You will be asleep ...” Fai murmured, tracing a finger along the ninja’s clavicle.
“You think you’ll be too tired?” Kurogane inquired, mostly teasing.
“Interesting invitation.” Fai grinned, his arms slipping over the other man’s shoulders. “So you want me to sneak into your room, all secret-like, in the middle of the night ...?”
“Unless you don’t want to,” Kurogane answered, his voice now completely serious.
“Oh, I want to,” Fai assured him. “I really, really want to.”
“Then it’s a deal.”
Fai was very close to kissing him again, but he remembered: “The floor! Must go finish-!”
Kurogane waited until the mage had finished getting dressed (his clothes being more or less where they were supposed to be), and before Fai could leave Kurogane backed him against the door.
“Yes?” Fai questioned, setting light hands at the ninja’s still-naked waist.
“You don’t look in any way presentable,” Kurogane growled, soft and appreciative.
“As I recall,” Fai said happily, “that is a certain ninja’s fault-not mine.”
Kurogane would really rather keep this view for himself; Fai with his cheeks flushed and his eyes bright and his lips swollen from kissing and his blond hair a mess and his clothes wrinkled and disorderly. But anyone who would notice would also have a pretty good idea of who was the cause of the dishevelment-and that, Kurogane did not mind.
Fai tipped his chin up and his eyes fluttered closed when Kurogane leaned down to kiss him. This was a soft kiss, a tender kiss. A kiss about something other than passion; something much gentler.
This kiss, more than anything else, tempted Fai to stay right where he was, in Kurogane’s arms.
It ended too soon and Fai whimpered in disappointment.
“You have to go.” Kurogane reminded him, voice low and teasing, “The floor is waiting.”
“Mean.” Fai grinned and poked a finger into his chest. “You are mean!”
“I’ll see you later.”
“Later.”
Fai watched the door close, still grinning. Then he ran down the hall and did a few somersaults and cartwheels on his way back to finish washing the floor, laughing.

end note: I have this gorgeous mental image of Kurogane sitting on the bed and Fai standing between his knees and Kurogane's hands are at his waist and Fai's fingers are in his hair and they're just looking at each other and smiling at each other and it's beautiful and GUH. hopefully it translated from my head to words, up there.
here, have a bonus song!
