I've been there. I flew ATA once and had the same situation from both sides and I was stuck in the middle hugging myself the whole trip because I couldn't even put my arms at my side. Honestly, at the time, I didn't even think of complaining to the airline. I just vowed never to fly ATA again.

I'll be interested to see if you get some form of satisfaction out of this because nobody should have to live through a flight that uncomfortable.

I recall many airline making a policy that if you couldn't fasten the seat belt without an extension, you had to buy the seat next to you. With many Americans on the high fructose corn syrup bleached flour diet, that seemed like a natural way to increase revenues.

As someone who is a bit... 'larger'... I'd like to comment on this as well. I'm not what you classify as obese. Yeah, I'm 6'2 and 280 lbs, but I'm not a pair with legs. I just have a little extra weight I'm trying to shed. My problem? My hips are too big ( ... )

i've called airlines where they do charge for telephone service if you opt to not use the online features. but then i've also been able to tell them to waive those fees because of options that were not availble or bad internet service.

it's one thing to pack in customers to make a profit, but I also realize, that had it been someone else in that seat, there would be NO WAY they'd be able to fit. I just happen to have small enough hips (and no ass), but any other adult would not be able to squeeze into the space i had without some lube or crisco.

How can you make sitting in a seat on an airplane sound so sexual?

More on topic...your letter is well written. i hope they give you some kind of response (although i don't see how theyt can prevent a recurrence, which i think is really what you would like).

I would say certainly grounds for a loud complaint (legal action - pass) but I would try and get something back from the airline.

i used to work as a TA as well.
but i guess i forgot that last bit when trying to get things for myself.
i'm great when complaining for others or finding cheap fares though!
hmm, hell, i'm great when finding the most expensive fares as well (for those yummy dream vacation types!)

Oh you know how I feel about this.
Fat can be helped.
I understand being a "larger" person. I'm 6'7 and magage to pack my ass into a seat without making other people uncomfortable, christ knows I'd love to sit at an angle and use the space of the chair next to me. Now If I could exercise and eat less and make my legs shorter I would.
People can eat less, and exercise more and make themselves less fat.
If they choose not to... (and no I don't buy the thyroid and genetics excuses. If I saw your ass in the gym four days a week and you said that, I would buy it, but you don't so I wont.)
Bottom line is if your lifestyle choice affects my life, I'm going to be pissed.

Good letter.

How very obtuse.

Yes there are many people who are large/obese living in situations where they can not help it. I, for instance, am an asthmatic, which means that for a good part of my year I struggle to simply breathe. I also am prescribed prednisone which can add up to 60 lbs of water weight to my 6'4" frame. The "fault" here is with the airline industry not recognizing that by and LARGE people are now bigger than they used to be (average dress size in the US is now a 12) It is most unfortunate that at times people like Kumi are literally squeezed out by the lack of proper adequate seating. I think a letter asking for compensation is the best route. I applaud Ms. Monster for having the grace and decency to keep mum so as not to embarrasses her seat mate!

as a side note I will add that when I can breathe I am generally 120 lbs smaller than when I am struggling and medicated. I will also note that Kumi's ample seat mate should have done his or her best to FOLD IN. ALl of the other fat fuckers will know what I mean by that!
