average dress size in the US is now a 12
Which is express BS.
Because it's not a size 12, it's a size 16.
It's just that the size 4 of 1940 has been tweaked by the garment industry to be a size one because all of the pukers complained and didn't want to be called a size four..
They have been sneaking the dress sizes down for years. they didn't have a size 00 or 000 in 1958, they called them size two and three.
People are getting bigger, bigger wide!
It's not a genetic factor, it's a food factor.
There were as many genetically tall people in 1908 as there are now, there are fewer malnourished people, but people's length has only been marginally improved by better diet and medical care, whereas their girth has improved drastically.

One could argue that soldiers are in the best shape of most of a country's population;
Now based on uniform issue between WWI and the current gulf conflict, in 1912, there were as many 36” inseams as there are today, but while the average inseam is 32” the average waist has gone from 30” to 34”. The average jacket size has gone from a 40” chest to a 46” chest. I’ll by the people getting bigger argument if Americans are the only ones affected by this evolutionary phenomenon. German uniform issue from 1906 to current has only fluctuated by 25% of what American girth has.
And remember this is from the demographic that is in shape, and not freebasing big macs while watching friends re-runs.

Yes, there are exceptions based on health conditions, but that in and of itself is an oreborus, heath conditions cause obesity, but obesity causes heath conditions;
In that case, people will get better, or they will die young.

But in 80% of cases, it’s not because of a pre-existing health condition it’s just a lack of discipline. I could argue that I’m genetically pre disposed to smoke, as I come from six generations of smokers, I was culturally exposed and physically addicted to nicotine before I had the chance to make a rational choice.

Still society is not going to cater to me because of something “I can’t help”;
because in the eyes of society, I have the choice to quit, irrespective of my disability.
