As someone who is a bit... 'larger'... I'd like to comment on this as well. I'm not what you classify as obese. Yeah, I'm 6'2 and 280 lbs, but I'm not a pair with legs. I just have a little extra weight I'm trying to shed. My problem? My hips are too big.

Yeah, I may have a little padding on them, but not overly much. I can fit in one seat, barely, and the seat arms come down right on top of the padding. But I'm self concious about taking too much room. Being tall and non-skinny, the airlines put you in a bit of a predicament anyway... How to not offend the person in the seat next to you, yet still have a modicum of comfort.

I try "thinking small", or getting either an aisle or window seat so I can "lean away" from the other person to give them space. My only other real option is to try and get a first-class (limited availability, and do I really want to pay $900 to fly from Billings to Denver, on top of the fare wherever else I go?) or business-class (there are no business class seats flying out of Billings, kids) seat.

Even better, it's almost impossible to buy a 'second seat' from the airlines websites, even if I wanted to. I can't get two seats registered to the same name... And if I CALL to book, I get a surcharge for 'telephone reservations'! JESUS. And that doesn't even note the fact that I'll now be paying TWICE the normal fare to get somewhere... Using my last trip, for example, turning a $650 flight to Boston into a $1300 flight.

While I accept that a) there is a MAJOR problem with obesity in this country (which I'm sorry you had to experience first-hand, Kumi) and b) the airlines should be able to make a 'fair' profit, they are doing it at the expense of their consumers -- you, me... and even Fat Bastard, lerring at the baby hungrily over in the corner.

This is why I prefer driving most of the time here in the States. It may be slower, but my car is more comfortable, and I don't have to worry about spilling over onto Model McHottie, even if she doesn't complain.

Sorry about the rantlet there, had to ventilate.

i've called airlines where they do charge for telephone service if you opt to not use the online features. but then i've also been able to tell them to waive those fees because of options that were not availble or bad internet service.

it's one thing to pack in customers to make a profit, but I also realize, that had it been someone else in that seat, there would be NO WAY they'd be able to fit. I just happen to have small enough hips (and no ass), but any other adult would not be able to squeeze into the space i had without some lube or crisco.

How can you make sitting in a seat on an airplane sound so sexual?

More on topic...your letter is well written. i hope they give you some kind of response (although i don't see how theyt can prevent a recurrence, which i think is really what you would like).
