How Wolverine: Origins Made Me a Better Writer

Dec 29, 2009 13:09

In my last post, I talked about finally rewriting my novel. What I neglected to tell you all is that I was partially inspired by finally watching Wolverine. I mean, X-Men Origins: Wolverine (what a lame title).

Fortunately, my expectations were greatly lowered before saw Wolverine (as I'll call it from here on out. Not that it was a great movie, ( Read more... )

I really liked Wolverine, though it was flawed in many ways. I agree with you that we didn't need the origin story, especially when you compare it to Bourne Identity (awsome movie(s), my wife's favorite), but I thought they did a decent job of it. I really enjoyed the Logan/Creed relationship, which almost made up for the butchering of the Sabertooth character in the first X-men. Turning Deadpool into a gestalt of various mutants kind of blew it for me though, and yeah, the adamantium bullet through the brain was forcing things a bit as well.

I admit, I liked it more than I thought I would, but I think that was because going in, I knew it was going to be pretty flawed.

Yeah, Liev Schreiber and Jackman were good; the Deadpool thing was awful. Also? Having both Cyclops and Professor X show up int his movie, not too mention the mutant camps Stryker had already built, really, really annoyed me.

But it could've been worse! It could've been X3!

I'll take the old 90s Saturday morning Xmen cartoon over the movies anyday. THOSE were stories! And like you suggest--just enough info on their backgrounds to make it work without pushing it past believeable limits.

The eyecandy in Wolverine was worth the price of the ticket. Did Hugh have more than a guinea-t on the whole time? Maybe there was a leather jacket at one point. Whew--I'm getting the vapors just thinking about it! Liev Schreiber, Hugh, Ryan Reynolds?? Hmmm...I don't remember there being any women in the flick. I'm sure there must have been, but I was too dazzled by all that happy manflesh.
;)

Now stop watching movies and get back to work!

Can I at least watch TV shows?

The 90s cartoon was cool. But those first two movies (especially the second) were GREAT.

And yes, I'd be willing to bet that if we had access to ticketbuyers stats, the audience that made Wolverine a financially successful film has more to do with women than fanboys.

I'll give you an hour a day for TV viewing. Use it wisely. :-P

Speaking of movies where we don't need to know all the beginnings... there was this film I remember seeing back when I was little about the struggles of an young man being raised by his aunt and uncle trying to find his place in the galaxy, not to mention battling for good and evil. While it was a decent film that even sparked a sequel or two, we really didn't need a movie (or three) to learn more about his mom and dad got it on along the lake shore or how his mother hung out with some goofy talking general.
