"You cheated!" Suz exclaims, frowning over at her red-haired lover and current companion. He looks back at her smugly.
"I did not, Suzie Q, you're just not any good at this game," Adam answers, with a shrug and a sip of his lemonade. Freshly squeezed, of course.
She groans, and leans back in her chair, not looking at him. "It's got nothing to do with my skill. You cheated."
He chuckles. "I did not. Joey's the one that cheats. I won fair and square, and you know what that means."
"I'm not ready yet. I don't want to deal with all of it; I like being here, not having to worry about any of it." she says with a soft, pained noise.
He stands up, and moves around to kneel in front of her, taking her hands in his, listening to the crash of the waves hitting the beach. "We can't stay here forever, sugar plum. We've got to go home, and you've got to get started on your training. You promised you would."
"One more day, Adam," she begs, nearly in tears. "One more day is all I ask. We can pack up tomorrow and head back. I just can't today."
He holds her to him, feeling her tears flow quietly onto his shirt. He checks his watch over her shoulder, realizing why she can't head back today.
It's Aaron's birthday.
