Disclaimer: NOT TRUE in the case of Adam and Kris. Based on a true story, but NOT them. Title is from 'A Day to Be Alone' by One Less Reason
Rating of this chapter: PG
Summary: Just another love story, but this one isn't filled with chocolates, butterflies, and fluffy bunny rabbits...though sometimes there are rainbows ;)
Warnings....lots of them: At times, this will be a pretty dark story...deals with domestic violence, rape, anorexia with a touch of bulimia, cutting, and death (but not of major characters). Also, since this is based on personal experiences, it may get pretty detailed and deep. It could be triggering. You have been warned!!!!!!
Notes: Um..........so we're nervous. We only wrote this because of iluvbeefhotdogs, so if it's horrible...blame him :p Oh, and this takes place in high school.
Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Homecoming worked out so much better than Kris had thought it would. He thought he had accomplished taking away at least a little of Adam's pain for awhile. The only thing he was worried about was the pain coming back and transforming Adam into the self-protective guy he had been before.
Thankfully, that Monday, Adam came to sit by Kris before the first period bell rang. "Hey."
"Hi!"
"How was your Sunday?"
"Not as fun as my Saturday, but it was okay. How was yours?"
"The same. I just wanted to say...I'm sorry I acted so cold before homecoming. It's just that I went through a really harsh breakup a couple weeks ago and...well..I still wasn't over it."
"You don't need to apologize. I obviously didn't mind too much."
Adam gave a small, quick smile, but it was a smile, so Kris smiled as well. "If you ever need to talk, I'm here."
"Thanks. So, enough about me. I feel selfish. Tell me about you."
"What about me?"
"Um...your new. Where'd you move from?"
"Arkansas."
"Arkansas?! What brought you from Arkansas to here?!"
Uh-oh. Here it came. Kris still hadn't talked about what happened to anyone, not even his aunt and uncle, who had so kindly adopted him after the accident instead of sending him to foster care. Kris wanted to tell Adam the truth, but didn't know if he wanted to tell, or if Adam wanted to hear, so he said simply, "I moved in with my aunt and uncle."
"Oh." Adam didn't press why. He seemed to sense that it was a touchy subject. Kris loved him for that. "Um...do you like it here?"
"It's different, but yeah...sort of."
"Sort of? I'm going to try to change that."
Kris smiled. Adam did too, only slightly again, then said, "Um...okay. I've been stalling. What I really want to know is if, um...you want to go do something again sometime."
That time, Kris beamed. He wanted to jump up and down and scream "yes" at the top of his lungs, but didn't. Instead, he said, as calmly as he could, "I'd love that."
"Great. Text me when you're free."
"I'm always free."
"Okay. Well I work Friday, but is Saturday okay? Or too soon?"
"Saturday's fine."
"Okay."
The bell rang and Adam walked back to his seat. Kris did his best to stop smiling.
That Saturday, Kris and Adam went to the mall. It had been Kris's suggestion, because he got the impression that shopping was one of Adam's favorite past times. He was correct. He didn't mind though. It actually seemed to bring Adam joy and Kris needed new clothes anyway.
"Oh, I'm sorry," Adam said after six- yes six- hours of non-stop shopping. "You're probably bored or hungry, aren't you?"
"Not bored, but hungry. Aren't you?"
"No, but I'll go with you while you eat something."
"Oh my gosh, I'm starting to think you never eat."
He said nothing.
After Kris ate, they shopped for a few more minutes, then Adam took him home. Kris wanted to kiss him so bad, but didn't. Adam was more comfortable around him and seemed to like him at least a little, but Kris could tell he wasn't ready. He still tensed whenever Kris got too close.
"Come on. One fry," Kris pleaded that Monday at lunch.
"Ew, no. Those are a heart attack waiting to happen."
"One isn't. One is bliss."
Adam laughed. "Okay. One."
"Thank you!"
Adam ate the fry, face contorting in pain as he did so. Kris laughed. "So dramatic."
"That wasn't drama. I was truly being tortured."
"Uh-huh. You know it was good."
Adam said nothing and when Kris looked up to see if he was okay, he was looking at something in the distance, eyes glazed over. Concerned, Kris followed Adam's stare to Connor and the school slut cuddling and kissing.
"Wow. Talk about a downgrade," Kris commented, not knowing what else to say. Apparently that wasn't it, because Adam bit his lip, got up, and walked out of the lunchroom. Kris followed.
"Adam, come here."
He ignored him and went into the bathroom. Kris followed him there too, so Adam spun to face him. "I'm okay. You can go back."
"I don't want to. You're obviously not okay."
Adam had to fight harder to hold back the tears. "I will be. Promise."
"I want to make sure."
"Why? Why should you care?"
"Because...I don't know what happened with you two, but I'd bet anything it was his fault. Someone, or everyone, has obviously hurt you and you don't deserve that. You deserve to be happy, and I want to try to make that happen."
Adam started to cry a little. "Why?"
"Because you're amazing."
"No I'm not."
"Yes you are."
"How would you know? You've only known me a couple weeks."
"How do I know? Because I see you, Adam. I've seen you all school year, but you were with that asshole that couldn't see the pain behind the smile, the tears behind the sparkles in your eyes, and the little quiver in your voice that's not from joy. I'm just sorry I didn't let you see me sooner."
Adam was crying then and covered his face with his hands. "I can't believe you got me to cry! I never cry in front of anyone!"
"Maybe that means you feel comfortable around me."
"I do...and it scares me."
Kris gave a little laugh and stepped forward to embrace Adam. "Please stop crying."
"I know I'm such an ugly crier. I'm sorry."
"You could never be ugly. It's just that you don't have to cry anymore."
