Rating of this chapter: PG
Summary: Just another love story, but this one isn't filled with chocolates, butterflies, and fluffy bunny rabbits...though sometimes there are rainbows ;)
Warnings....lots of them: At times, this will be a pretty dark story...deals with domestic violence, rape, anorexia with a touch of bulimia, cutting, and death (but not of major characters). Also, since this is based on personal experiences, it may get pretty detailed and deep. It could be triggering. You have been warned!!!!!!
Notes: Um..........so we're nervous. We only wrote this because of iluvbeefhotdogs, so if it's horrible...blame him :p Oh, and this takes place in high school.
Chapter 1 "Seriously? I thought you were done with guys for awhile?" Neil, Adam's brother, asked when Adam let him know of the homecoming news.
"I thought I was too," Adam admitted, "but he's cute, and besides, I already made it clear that he's not getting any."
Neil sighed. "Be careful. I can't take your heart getting broken again."
"Shut up."
At that moment, his phone started ringing. "Hold on. It's him I think. Hello?"
"Adam?"
"Kris?"
"Yeah."
"Hey."
"I was just making sure you gave me the right number." He laughed, almost nervously, and Adam fought back a smile.
"I'm not that mean."
"You don't seem mean at all. You just never know."
Adam knew that all too well.
"So...homecoming..."
"Yeah. Did you want to go with colors or standard black and white?"
"Black and white with colored boutonnieres."
"Okay. Um...the only problem with this is that I can't drive."
"It's okay. I can."
"Okay. Then you can drive and I'll buy the tickets."
"I can buy my own."
"No. I asked. I'll buy. Did you want to go eat before?"
"No."
"...You sure?"
"Positive."
"Okay. Homecoming starts at eight next Saturday, right?"
"Right."
"So you'll pick me up...?"
"Depends where you live."
Kris gave him his address and Adam said, "Okay. I'll pick you up at seven forty five."
"Sounds good."
"We can talk more about it in class if we need to."
"Okay. Bye."
"Bye."
Adam hung up, then turned to Neil, who was staring with a raised eyebrow. "What?"
"If you want this guy to keep liking you, you might want to be a little less short and a little more into him."
"I don't want him to like me."
"Uh-huh."
"I don't!"
"Then why'd you say yes?"
That was a good question.
Adam hated to admit it, but the closer homecoming got, the more excited he became. The break-up with Connor was getting easier to deal with and, well, honestly, Adam had never done well alone. He didn't think it was just that though. Kris was really cute and he seemed nice, in a standoffish kind of way. He was almost like an abused puppy. And Adam would know.
Adam arrived at Kris's house at exactly seven forty-five homecoming night. A lady who he assumed to be Kris's mom opened the door only a moment after he rang the bell. "Hi, Adam! Come on in! Kris is almost ready."
"I am ready," Kris corrected as he hurried gracefully...beautifully...perfectly down the stairs. "Hey, Adam. Thanks for picking me up."
"It's no problem."
Adam couldn't stop staring, and he felt his hard protective shield crumbling. He always knew Kris was cute, but, in the suit, he went up to a whole new level.
"She wants to take pictures," Kris said, nodding at his mom. "I hope you don't mind."
"Oh my god, I take horrible pictures!" Adam exclaimed. Kris just laughed, took his hand, and led him over to the fireplace. At his soft, warm, touch, Adam felt his shield crumble a little more. Then, after the picture was taken and Kris looked to see if it was good, he looked Adam directly in the eyes and said, "You're so beautiful," and the rest of his shield fell apart. He had never been called beautiful before in his life. He heard hot and sexy but never beautiful. The closest thing he'd ever gotten was gorgeous from Connor, but he only said that as he tried to undress him, right before they broke up.
At first, Adam was scared that he could no longer keep up the hard attitude around Kris, but only a few minutes into homecoming, realized it was a good thing. He actually had fun. Kris only got close when they were dancing, which he actually did despite "being horrible at it."
"Thanks for coming with me," Kris said once Adam pulled into his driveway at the end of the night.
"Thanks for asking me. I had fun."
"Good. I did too."
"I'll walk you to the door."
As he got out of the car, Adam realized that was probably a bad idea. Kris would probably want a kiss or...something, and he wasn't ready. He knew that. But, just as the panic really started to set in, Kris simply hugged him, said goodnight, and told him he was beautiful one more time.
Adam cried all the way home.
"Oh god, what the hell happened?" Neil asked when he ran into the house, still crying.
"Nothing," he answered honestly. Then me made his way quickly to his bedroom and looked in the mirror, checking himself out from every angle. He was beautiful.
He believed it for the night at least.
