Zetsu always loved proving people wrong, discouraging them, or anything that would damage their pride. He supposes this is the same as all of those other times, just a tad more risky. His five years of acute ninja training could all be flushed away as soon as Hayate opens the cardboard box he is carrying, containing a small opium plant in its early stages of growth ( ... )

Hayate's head tilted in greeting and took the box wordlessly. The threat did not go unnoticed and he furrowed his brows together in disapproval, the action hidden mostly behind the hat, his glance lingering to observe Zetsu's expression which amused Hayate more than anything else, however, he didn't let it show. After a moments hesitation he nodded to seal the arrangement.

"Are you sure this is an indoor plant? If it doesn't adapt well to the change in environment, there's nothing myself or anyone else could do to save it," Hayate's voice was strained and muffled. The consequences were unacceptable. "I'm sure you can... collect the seeds and grow new plants."

He knew a thing or two about plants due to the various medicinal herbs he kept around and hoped taking care of a seemingly common plant didn't require any special instruction. Tucking the box close to his side, Hayate voiced another question out of curiosity and not meaning disrespect. "Is there a reason why you can't look after it?"

It’s not going to be my ass expelled for being caught with narcotics, Zetsu feels he should say. Just to be honest. But he doubts Hayate would accept this answer so he scowls and opts for something else that's believable. “You wanted my trust, so I’m trusting you with my plant.” On another note, he supposes collecting the seeds is much cheaper than purchasing more of those -excessively- expensive plants.

“It’s not usually an indoor plant, but it can’t take the snow. It will stay inside. It's been doing fine in my dormitory.” He adds pointedly and tugs his own cap father down over his chilled ears.

An odd request. Hayate shrugged with indifference. Bringing a gloved hand up to his mouth and coughed, easing the tingling sensation in his chest, he eyed the box curiously. In return for Zetsu's trust he didn't question the contents of the box and resisted the temptation to peek in. He didn't think excuses would be necessary if Genma were to inquire about the plant, Hayate would tell the truth and say it's a favour for a senpai, and he could only count on his friend to respect their deal.

Instead of thinking of ways to defend his position, he would need to think of lectures in case he caught Genma in the act of doing something near the plant.

"Of course... I'll take good care of it, Zetsu-senpai," he said with sincerity. "If you want I can even collect and dry some seeds when the time is right."

“That would be... thoughtful, Hayate-kun.”

Zetsu’s eyes wander from Hayate’s face down to the box they exchanged. He looks particularly irate, but thoughtful and focused, too. Hayate’s roommate undoubtedly isn’t an idiot. The plant will grow to be at least five feet tall. It won’t be able to hide in that box by a window forever.

Eventually someone will say something.

Zetsu frowns and he reaches for the box meekly, as if to take it back. Perhaps this is too big of a risk for just a kouhai.
