What kind of yarn was it? I've had problems with yarn that has a thick, loftier single plyed with a thin, tight single. I noticed however that when I loosened up my stitches that this didn't happen anymore. Maybe you are knitting to tight or tugging on the yarn before you wrap the yarn around you needle to knit the next stitch.

Also, if your yarn was handspun, it could very likely be that the spinner added to much twist to their yarn as they were plying.

Hope this helps!

That is strange. Maybe contact the manufacturer? I did this once and was sent a 10 skein bag.

Sorry, just re-read your post, that it was a manufactured cotton. Okay, I'm almost 100% postive that you are knitting too tight. This happens to us all!! Read knitty.com's article "Loosen Up!" in their current edition. It helped me a lot.

Nope, stranger, it was coming right out of the skein all twisted like that. I noticed the problem with the twisting of the yarn before I even touched it to my needles!

I've used quite a bit of Grace, and I've never encountered that problem. Weird. I think I'd write to Paton's, and talk to them about it. Who knows - maybe it is a known problem, and they'll give you free yarn (it's been known to happen!)

I had a problem similar to this in a skein of Koigu -- about 3 or 4 yards that was barely plied at all! So it does happen, albeit rarely and frustratingly. I'd write to Patons as well.
