Hm. I had that happen, but I never had to retype the paper -- professors always accepted "the email system is down and I cannot get at my copy" as a valid excuse.
Oh god, that sucks so hard. Shit like this is why I became incredibly paranoid about backups in my last year or two of classes. Multiple flash drives (at least one on me at all times), emailing everything to at least three email accounts, etc. etc... for every paper, every essay, and I think I still have a few CDs I burnt of the literary magazine in various stages of completion for at least two semesters.
I'm afraid I can't relate to college papers, as I'm old enough that all my papers were hand written, hand edited then typed on a typewriter (nothing to save, but then, if the paper got lost, nothing to re-send either).
But I can relate to writing up large documents at the lab in my capacity as technical writer only to discover that it either got overwritten or never saved or I left it open and there was a power glitch.
I feel incredibly fortunate that hand writing things is no longer necessary.
I mean, I do SOME handwriting. Especially for research papers. But I think I might cry. Writing is physically painful for me and always has been. By high school, I was at least able to use my packard bell or tandy to type stuff out.:)
