The way you feel about the Gurren Lagann films is the same way that I feel about the upcoming Eureka Seven movie which is also a shortened rehash of the series. The only other anime series turned movies that I know of (Utena and Escaflowne) were both vastly inferior to the series, so the track record is just not there for me to be excited.

I mean, I will watch because I am a fan, but still, sometimes things need to be just left alone.

Yeah I have never seen a movie of a series that is better than the original series. Usually they are god awful which admittedly based on reviews the Gurren Lagann movie does not seem to be thankfully. But if it's not going to add anything to the series (a few additional scenes do not count) then I see it as entirely unnecessary. As you said things should just be left well enough alone.

Yeah.

And with sequels, it is more like if I want to know what is going on with everyone or whatever after the series, then I will imagine it in my head or write fanfiction. But inner imaginings and fanfiction don't impact the series itself, where a sequel locks it in, and I am a person who cannot discard canon, so if I don't enjoy a sequel that tarnishes the original source and it can be rather painful.

Yes I am exactly the same way with sequels and canon. Yeah sometimes I would like seeing more of my favorite characters but I see that want as a good thing. It means the series was successful to leave me wanting more. But sometimes (actually quite often) when you get more you end up being disappointed in the end. I would rather keep things to my own interpretation and imagination.I don't need that sequel to tell me what happens next.

With Tutu...sigh...it is tough, because part of me would love a sequel (which is extremely unlikely at this point), but another part of me recognizes that the series ends perfectly. Maybe if they did a similar series with different characters?

I stopped reading the Hagaren manga around chapter 60 or 70 because I got tired of waiting for a new chapter to come out each month (I would be terrible at reading serial manga in Japan). Maybe now I'll catch back up. But I don't think I'll be checking out the new anime. I much preferred the manga storyline and character development.

You should catch up with Hagaren you are not that far behind since the manga is only in the 80's. I don't know how the anime will turn out but the manga is excellent. I feel it is the most consistently good manga I've ever read. :)

wsit: Oh wait I lied accidentally it's in the 90's. but you should still catch up. :)

I agree in general about sequels. There's just...no need at all in a lot of cases, and one of my favorite parts about anime to begin with is that most of them know when to end it at the right time/have a specific, predetermined ending they're working towards.

I tend to think movie remakes of things are slightly fun in their own right, though--it's almost like just a random bonus if you're able to get over the fact that it'll never be anywhere near as good as the series was. Then I just go into it hoping to have fun and enjoy the shiny animation and new scenes almost like one would enjoy fanfiction. XD It always is a little disheartening, though, that you know the movies basically just exist to milk the franchises and never seem to be as...artistically complete, I guess, as the series that preceded them. Because they're not the original--they're not that raw, initial storytelling that made it great, and also when you condense things it rarely has a good effect...

I think I am just tired of remakes and sequels in general. Even though some are not bad, some maybe even better than the original (in the rare case) but it feels like we are overwhelmed by them. It's like the entertainment industry is too lazy to come up with new ideas and they just want to cash in on past successes yet they end up ruining what people once loved. But now I am just being a complete drama queen here so I will stop. :)
