I'm really shocked 12K is in the needs more evidence section considering there's an entire lengthy arc dedicated to romance free interaction between three women.
Yeah I was shocked at that too. Well I hope my post (on the 2nd page) confirms that it definitely passes and with flying colors. I can remember many conversations between the female characters Youko/Sugimoto Youko with Suzu and Shoukei and Suzu/Shoukei. And none of these conversations are about guys.
It is probably because the first person who recced it didn't list it as a definite pass because they couldn't recall much so it is just asking for further explanation.
It's actually a series that goes above and beyond this test when it comes to giving depth to its female characters. So I guess that is why it is amusing to see that it needs clarification. :)
At first, when I read your post, I was willing to bet that Kaoru and Misao must have had at least one chat that didn't involve men. But then I remembered that it might be hard, considering Kaoru was all over Kenshin and Misao was pretty much obsessed with Aoshi. lol
I do have the episodes at hand. I would look for it if it wasn't so late...
It's okay I have the manga and I tried to find one but I couldn't. Well there was a time that Kaoru mentions the Oniwabanshū to Misao but I am not sure if that counts.
This just bothers me for some reason because I definitely think the Kenshin ladies are awesome despite maybe failing this test. XD
I think the criteria is interesting but not perfect. I also think that certain series might fail but still have well developed female characters because of other respects. And a series can certainly pass but fail in other regards. I guess these things aren't perfect.
The point of the test is to highlight something other than how awesome the women are it is to show how women are used in the story. It is used to show how many times women are centered around men and not allowed to have deep and meaningful relationships with each other or that the friendship between women is not interesting.
If you reverse the test for male characters a series will pass like 99% of the time. Granted this test was formed with Western films as a guide and it is distressing at how few movies even do that much, because it is not a hard standard to pass.
You can fail the test and have awesome female characters, the test does measure how awesome the women are and it is not supposed to. It is just mean tto show how most often men and their relationships are put above women and theirs.
I haven't read the novels either but I have basic knowledge of what's in them and the Shoukei/Suzu/Youko stuff is. XD
I guess those 3 don't meet up till the end but they converse and of course it isn't about guys.
I guess Kenshin does fail. It makes me sad but I still think it is a case where the show does have well written female characters even if it fails the test. I don't think the test is perfect.
Kaoru and Megumi definitely didn't pass, but I could have sworn that Kaoru and Misao passed. I'll have to dig around and see. Maybe they pass anime-only?

(The anime must have had some filler episode where they don't talk about guys! Those count too!)
Note to self: remeber to add Macross Frontier to that list tomorrow. It's definitely a pass.
Now, off to bed! :D
