Gurren Lagann is overly sexualized and compared to Hentai

But sexually-suggestive and explicit anime like "Gurren Lagann" and "Legend of the Overfiend," is finding an eager audience of adult Americans who are drawn to the post-modern, almost post-human mash-up of playful, blurry morality found in the genre.Way to go MSNBC for your brilliant ( Read more... )

Wow, the sci-fi channel plays porn? I NEVER KNEW.

I hate articles like this. And the appeal of anime is that it's immoral? I'm pretty sure that's not the case for most fans or congoers.

Epic monster fail. Worse 'cuz it's on a major news site.

I bet they saw a picture of Yoko and made assumptions of what it is. And yeah I would have preferred if Gainax designed Yoko wearing something else but its not like Japanese anime is the only media that has fan service like that and it's not even that bad.

Yeah god forbid we watch anime/read manga for the stories and characters. D:

At least Yoko's clothing (revealing as it is) makes some sort of sense as opposed to most fanservice. They live in a desert so it's obviously really hot and a girl wearing a bikini and shorts hardly seems unreasonable. Kamina and Simon are shirtless all the time. I mean yeah they could have done it in a less revealing manner, but it's not like there's not tons of stuff like that in mainstream western media as well.

I don't know why anime has to be seen as a genre anyway. Just like animation itself, it's a medium, not a genre. Yeah there are genres within anime, but I love anything that tells a good story, no matter how it chooses to do it or what country produces it.

Meh, I'm so over crap like that article. Ugh. >>

Well I am pretty sure they designed Yoko's costume with fan service in mind not practicability considering that is not the type of clothing people wear in any desert culture but whatever I have seen worse and not just in anime.

Agreed about anime being a medium not a genre. When I say I am a fan of anime it is because of certain anime series but I like that series because of the story and characters.

Obviously that doesn't mean I love every single anime series out there or even most because I consider myself an anime fan. I just love what Japan has done with animation. Although my love for animation is not exclusive to Japan.

I really wish the media would buck up when they ever encounter and try to write about any "niche" culture this is on par of what happens when any major media outlet tries to write about fanfiction and other fanworks.

I love the observation of that apparently there are girls there too. DEAR MSNBC, GIRLS ARE NERDS TOO GET USED TO IT. OH AND THEY LIKE SEX TOO.

But honestly that whole article is par for the course. While I do think things like anime culture, and any fan culture can be interesting from a sociological standpoint that kind of thing is not going to be explored with proper delicacy and intentions.

That whole article is just "HEY LOOK AT ALL THE WEIRDOS".

Well considering the fact that he is the author of “America Unzipped: In Search of Sex and Satisfaction." it looks like he is the one who has too much sex on his mind not anime fans.

LOL although I was once told by my friend that anime is a guy thing that some girls like. I know a lot of people are shocked by the amount of girls in the fandom and even more shocked that their is anime aimed at girls and women and female comic artists. I guess stereotypes still rule the day.

I am frustrated that this helps spread negative stereotypes about anime but at the same time I am so amused at the pure stupidity of it.

I see it this way, they will always continue to try to bash anime in some form or way, they always have to find a flaw in everything.

I was totally thinking of you when the Roy-tachi were reunited. That scene was so awesome. And I can't wait to see what develops with Mrs. Bradley. Arakawa is a master of pulling all her plots together ♥

It has some fan service but other then that it is super robot /growing up story. I am pretty sure it aired at 8:30 AM which is not the time you show adult programming in Japan.

Probably more ridiculous than offense :)
