The Lakes, Slayers and More

1) I finished the first series of the Lakes today and liked it quite a bit (well at least the last two episodes when it was more about the boating accident). I thought the ending to the first series was perfect and very powerful (I am a fan of ambiguous open endings) so I am not going to watch the second series. Not to mention I read a little bit ( Read more... )

NEXT is the highlight of the series and really when I tell people to watch Slayers I mean "watch Slayers NEXT." But the first series establishes relationships and the meta-plot of NEXT, so it's kinda required.

.....................And that gay dragon episode was pretty damn funny.

Yeah I don't think I would have enjoyed NEXT as much if I had not seen the Original Slayers series first. Well I guess I would have still enjoyed it but I would have wanted to know how everyone knew each other and so forth. :D

It seems the general consensus is that NEXT is the best of Slayers. It's odd for a sequel to be better than the original but then again I guess NEXT isn't a true sequel since it was based on an ongoing novel series. :)

I've heard mixed opinions on Try did you like it then?

i liked try. but they do deviate from the original feel of slayers and slayers next, AND even the original novel storyline. so i can see why ppl had mix feelings from it.

For me it's actually the characterization I have big issues with (not the more serious tone or the deviation from the novel- there is tons of deviation in seasons one and two as well). I felt like everyone was OOC or regressed to a sort of cardboard version of their early series personalities for much of the series. Amelia and Gourry in particular made me cringe. And the fact that Lina was largely not the main character anymore throughout much of the series.

Yeah I'm so pleased Funi is releasing the series in cheap boxsets, but I am peeved about that cover art. I mean way to use random one arc characters (and not even the climactic arc) for your covers.

I love the first season but undoubtedly the second one is just... vastly superior. It's what makes Slayers! ♥

Plus the entire cast is epic. A lot of people hate Martina but I love her (and Xelloss of course). Amelia hate seems to have died down in recent years, so that's a good thing. But yeah, the hate used to be... intense. She is my favorite character and Z/A is my OTP. I absolutely love Lina/Gourry too though.

I know WTH. I am surprised they kept Lina and Gourry on there.

And I like Lina/Gourry quite a bit too. It's one of the many series where I am all about the canon pairings. Well I think they are canon. ♥

Lina might be my homegirl, but Amelia is fucking awesome. There's so much love for the four main characters in my heart of hearts, really.

I blame Xelloss for me liking the 'mystery lolsome smiling guy who follows the main characters in some way' stereotype. No wonder I grew so attached to Ling Yao.

Yeah I definitely think the characters make the show. :)

And you know you are so right about Xellos being similar to Ling. He did remind me of someone too. XD

I see a good deal of Xelloss-like traits in Ling. Actually, I see a lot of Xelloss-like traits in a huge subset of my all-time favorite characters, and since he's the first one I put the blame on him. But funny enough, all these other characters -Ling included- are either deep down really nice or have good intentions in the end. Xelloss doesn't: he's the only one who's actually evil XD

Aww that was really sweet although I am jealous of your autographs. XD

For some reason your story reminds me of watching anime with my friend and her little sister. But her little sister has grown up so much LOL.
