Once when he had a terrible longing for warmth he stopped into the coffee shop on the corner. It was not a good coffee shop and whenever anyone sipped the coffee he or she made a sour face, but it was convenient, being located exactly in between his flat and the college. The late autumn was rain-drenched and bone-deep and there was no amount of rubbing one's hands together for friction- all was black and grey and his flat had no heat. He pestered the landlord, but even the name Pendragon was useless in the face of football playoffs. Arthur sympathised, for he spent more time watching telly, bundled into three jumpers in his flat with a bowl of hot soup for warmth, than he should, but he needed his radiator to radiate ( ... )

'I know you,' the man said. He had an open schoolboy's face, big-eared, pale with a gingery dusting of freckles over his nose, and a bad haircut, or perhaps his hair couldn’t take any kind of cut. It was thick and looked unmanageable ( ... )

'How is Gaius, anyway?' he asked, and the man turned with a startled, dreamy face. Arthur had never found the patience to read for pleasure and he had never been jealous of anyone who liked to do it, but he was jealous then, wondering if he could ever have that essential lostness in anything ( ... )

Your writing is beautiful, and I love how isolated Arthur is. Looking forward to more!

Of course Merlin didn't care anything for football or rugby or any other sport, or he didn't know he cared for them until Arthur showed him. There was a long Sunday when Arthur tried not to go to the coffee shop until, reasoning that it would be warm and he could have some of the matcha tea, and catch up on his grading, he went with a scowl. The new tea pot rested at the bottom of the cupboard by the door, atop a pile of blankets he meant to donate ( ... )

When he was back in his flat he rang Guinevere, still in London, still in their old flat with the too-low ceilings. 'Just wanted to say hello,' he said. It was only two hours since he'd posted a picture of his broken radiator to facebook with the caption 'Welsh fireplace' and stirred a flurry of responses, some joking, some not. He'd forgot how many of his friends were from Wales. Gwen had replied 'Be glad it's still there,' and five people had liked it. Underneath her response was one from Merlin Emrys: 'Be glad there's not a crackhead living in it ( ... )

I am really enjoying this. You're setting up a great picture of Arthur as a loyal man who is really lonely and reaching out to someone he'd usually ignore. And Merlin seems very personable. I'm looking forward to more.

If there were colour there by the water he might have avoided the mistakes which were, after all, not inevitable. They were quite evitable, in fact. But there was no colour he could see anywhere, no light. It confused him, and he confused himself, that people who lived in grey winters should wear black and seek out the dark, as if to sleep or suffocate. There was a small green glass beetle in the window of his classroom and it reminded him of the matcha tea, and of Merlin. Merlin wore dark colours but there was the warm light of his face and whenever he patted Arthur's shoulder heat bled through from skin to skin ( ... )

Being on the first level still his fingers did not falter, and he set the pencil down and withdrew his arm without consequence. He stole one of Merlin's chips and they talked about the paper Merlin wanted to publish; he had three he worked on at various times, and all of them piqued Arthur's curiosity. Merlin studied the literature of revolutions; he liked to see what was written just before the uprising, just when there was a spark of divinity and righteousness before fury tipped into madness ( ... )
