Cold Hands - Warm Thoughts

Apr 08, 2008 14:10

Ok, it's fucking freezing in my office right now... I think I might start just bringing gloves to work with me.  I realize I'm in the NOC with computers etc that need to be kept cool but jeezus and puppies it's cold!

Oh definitely. Even down here in NZ, which is supposed to be a peaceful small country, we're getting more and more violent crime and more and more of them being committed by kids. It used to be that we rarely had murders and they always made the frontpage, now this year alone we've had plenty. Won't be long til our cops are packing heat as well.

And of course in a bigger picture, all the past 'empires' have burnt themselves out, especially the Romans. So really how long is until the 'American Empire' goes the same way? And who is next for a shot, China?

My conspiracy theory brother-n-law told me about 8 or 9 years ago that America would have its reign ended by China... They are quite a powerhouse in that they don't get bogged down in public opinion or human rights. Leaving them the freedom to fuck shit up and run pirate-style economics etc...

But it makes you wonder if the murders were always there and unreported or if the media reports the murders because it's the only thing that'll take people away from Dancing With the Stars...

I wonder about that sometimes. Not that I'm going to wait for someone I know to be murdered to believe that they happen but it'd be curious to look at the statistics for the area to see if crime is indeed on the rise.

But not to take away from what you've shared. I get to feeling like that as well. That we're on the 4th or 5th generation of kids who have been raised is crazy households.

And then I think again - this has always been the way, we're just more aware of it now because of the ease of information sharing.

That's why I feel like we're in the middle of some insanely huge cultural growing pains. I mean, it's an exciting time to be alive but it's also unnerving!

Computers and hardware survive just perfectly at 70°F! There is such a thing as making them too cold and suffering more hardware failures than a more normal termperature..., but I digress ( ... )

I've tried to tell people for a while now that even if the Bible is divinely inspired, human prejudices still color it.

Your grandparents' stance on religion sounds very much like the older members' of my family and the one I try to emulate. I consider myself a Christian, but have been told by more theologically versed friends that my beliefs sound more like a Christian/Buddhist hybrid. I just stay open, accepting ideas that foster love and acceptance and reject that which I deem to be hurtful. That just makes so much more sense than the fire and brimstone fundamentalists preach. If God is our father, what kind of father wants his children to fight, hate and coerce each other in his name? It's ridiculous and so plainly just men trying to keep people in line. Anyway, off my flower child soap box, your grandparents sound spot-on. :-)

Both Buddhism and Christianity enjoin their followers to cultivate compassion, the former through various practices, the latter through the adoration of the baby Jesus and the humiliated, crucified body of Christ. It's kind of a "same stew, different spoon" sort of thing. The Fire and Brimstone types that you mention encourage people to cultivate an aggressive kind of fear and anger to produce an identity that defines itself as "not them," which is a kind of dualistic thinking that. . . well. . . sucks.

So I agree with you, but for different reasons. :-)

As far as twiiter goes, I turned my updates to my cell phone off. I was tired of thinking it was something important and it wasn't. I just read what ya'll put when I log in on the web. It also updates in google talk....so much easier. I figure if anmyone has anything to tell me they will direct message me!

As far as religeon goes, and being so myself, I think you are spot on in your evaluation. I don't go to a church nor do involve myself with them. I would rather have one on one good conversations with folks if it comes up. Otherwise I just want to have a good time and not worry about it. ;)
