I am confused??!!!35mmblackwhiteJanuary 15 2006, 16:03:31 UTC
I thought feminsim was about equal rights for both sexes. not just women. there are problems on both sides and if everyone can work together... wait a minute, this is the United States we are talking about... Telling women to wear make-up and get thin and wear this and don't do that is really about making money, not about controlling or degrading women. you DON'T have to listen to "them"...

I don't think anything here is really disputing equal rights for both sexes. Admittedly the original post talks of rape as occuring to women, and it would be good to realise that rape happens to men, though I think that's a very forgivable issue here as it is by no means intending to demean rape on males.
Espicially as the issue is different for cultural reasons anyway.
And I think we don't want to understate the power of the media in making us believe and feel certain things. We can ignore any one instance, but the constant drip-drip-drip barrage of media images that never go away can't help but have an effect.
Oh, and it would be a mistake to just say 'feminism is about equal rights for both sexes', it is first and foremost a women's movement, although one that is expanding to consider issues with the male gender in a more understanding light as time goes on.
Dang, I should have posted on this the other day instead of just adding it to my memory list and going "damn good post". It will not change the ignorance or stupidity of those who refuse to listen to anything that might threaten their safe little view of the world and their secure place in it. But, I have to add my two cents
( ... )
I am one person and I have limited resources. I am a martial artist at heart and a cautious person, so I will remain such and would teach my daughters self-defense, alongside my sons, for all its benefits. But, the more valuable training will be in respect for themselves and others, in how a having healthy relationship means hard work & skills developed over time, and to not condone any dishonorable act.
(Sorry for the long post; I'll get off the soapbox now.)
I agree with the suggestions to tell people rape is wrong and not rape people.
I disagree with the idea that people ought do nothing to stay safer.
I think we need to address the problem from both of these directions. We need to educate and create a society where people won't rape other people. But, while there are people out there who will rape people, I think we need people to have the knowledge of how to how to decrease the risk.
I also disagree with the only men rape women assupmtion within all these comments. Women can rape men. Men can rape men. Women can rape Women. Yes, men raping women is a bigger problem in our society. But, we ought to tell our boys and our girls that raping people is bad.
I think that the reality of it is that rapists are deeply flawed on a psychological level. Telling or educating a rapist that rape is wrong isn't going to make any difference. Even bringing up all children into believing rape is wrong isn't going to make a difference.
The best thing anybody can do to avoid rape is to have great friends to look out for them, and to wherever possible preempt and avoid situations where there may be a statstically high probability of being raped.
The reality is that there have been rapists since the beginning of time, and no matter what the culture is - rape will still occur.
It's a Utopian ideal that it's possible to live in a world without rape.
Besides, this is somebodys private journal, and any opinions on here won't make a ripple in the deep dark dirty lake of real world rape.
