Outings

I know the pediatrician told me to keep Elias away from public places as much as possible for the first 2 months, but what do I do then? Sit at home and lose my mind? So far I have managed to avoid taking him to public places. The last time I went to Wegmans my mom waited in the car with Elias while I did my grocery shopping. Yesterday I had Hassan ( Read more... )

go for a walk! you're going to go stir crazy if you don't leave your house for 2 whole months with a newborn!
we were told to wait 6 weeks, but we took zeke out when he was two weeks old. my dad was in town and we went out for breakfast. granted, this was also in august and we didn't have to worry as much about the flu season. we kept him in the sling though and he never came in any kind of close contact with people. and it was fine. over the next couple of weeks we went out more and more. we avoided malls and other crowded places, but we went to parks and the zoo and other "open" places. that might be something nice you could do pretty soon :)

oh, also, fevers in babies under 2-3 months are normal and common. it's not too serious unless it's coupled with other symptoms and goes over 100.4 (and even then it doesn't neccessarily mean hospitalization, usually a dr will just want to evaluate him)

I guess winter babies are supposed to be more sheltered but you're right, I would go stir crazy if I had to stay inside for 2 months! You know, I've never actually been to the Buffalo Zoo in the 8 years I've lived here. Now that I have a child I'll have a reason to go. :P

he's fine to take out... as long as 1) he's bundled up int he cold weather and 2) if you avoid the crowded/smoking areas of places and wash your hands.

it's just a precaution... especially with the cold weather he's more likely to get sick than if he were a summer baby.

but go for a walk... he needs fresh air just as much as you do!

I should've had a summer baby so I wouldn't have to shelter him so much. lol

I'm a firm believer in not sheltering babies so much. I think he should go out so that he is exposed to germs and builds his immune system. Of course you're going to bundle him up and all that good stuff. You can't just sit in the house with him for the first year of his life.

Yea, I'm not one to boil the pacifiers everytime. I boiled them the first time but now I just rinse them once in a while. I too believe he should be exposed to germs to build his immune system. I guess I just don't want to take that risk while he's still a newborn and not as strong.

Don't worry too much. I've been taking my son out in public since he was 3 days old (he was born September 24th). We went to Babies R Us, the mall, Target, Wegmans, restaurants, all sorts of places. And this was all during the holiday shopping season! I just wore him in a wrap or sling, and that kept people from getting their icky germs all over him. I'd have lost my mind if we hadn't made an effort to get out of the house every day.

And as for the cold, my boy was three weeks old when we had that storm in October and lost power for 4.5 days. We had no heat, and the house was 48 degrees. We kept him in a hat, onesie, socks, thick sleeper, fleece sleeping bag, and then a blanket and he did just fine. Most definitely go for a walk! :)
