I don't have much personal experience with that sort of depression. I've heard from people who do that travel can break through it, and shakes it up even after return.
But mostly, people I know who have chronic depression eventually find the right drugs to manage it, or they keep having it. On the path to finding the right ones, many of them do indeed encounter drugs with side effects, and it's often a difficult time until they find the right tradeoff for them (side effects significantly less bad than the benefits of the drugs).
The best thing I'd suggest right off the bat is spend some time outside on each nice day. If you have a nice yard or pool, spend time there. Sunlight does wonders for some people.
I have Made Myself Do Things lately, a pulling-myself-up-by-my-bootstraps sort of thing, kind of a self-chivvying "fake it til I make it" kind of affair. It's painful and I hate it, but it seems to be working, at least somewhat as I have run into some rather amazing people synchronicitously/serendipitously, just by showing the hell up, even when it's not convenient (Nothing is convenient. There is no such thing as a good time.) even when I hate it and all involved. Even when I'd rather be jammed under a rock
