Are the novels considered canon? Because they even go so far as to say that Repliku started out exactly the same way as Xion (in that he looked like a mecha-doll-thing with no distinguishing features) until Vexen put Riku's data into him.
The Days novels are far more tricker in the canon department since the person writing them is one of the people who worked with Nomura on Days itself. So you can't say anymore it's an unrelated party - it's an inside job.
The cynical part of me wants to say that it is because he's a guy. But I honestly don't know.
Maybe it has something to do with the fact that his basic story doesn't really sound like a generic Mary Sue pulled from FF.net. And, let's face it, it doesn't matter what your opinion of Xion is, anyone who hears "She's the 14th member of the Org, is important to Roxas, and wields a Keyblade" is going to have a kneejerk "OMG MARY SUE!" reaction.
See, that tends to be my thought process, too. That it's because he's a guy. :/
S'why I asked.
And yeah, I don't blame them. ...Then, she's given context, and you see, at least to me, it's not that bad--she at least has reasons beyond the author going, "Because I say so!"
I'm pretty sure there are people who don't want to see the context. Sure there are some people who play the game and and think it all makes sense, while others play it and wonder what the point was. (But then, that can be said about everything, can't it?) But some people just seem to be blindly sticking to their first impression of her, logic and canon be dammed.
See, there are some people who make decent arguments as to why they don't like her.
I will NOT accept "Every guy in the game cares about her" as one, since I can count on one hand the number of guys who even give a damn she exists, and one's just interested in her as a tool while the other hates her guts. One's even debatable about liking her. >>
See, my first impression was, "...Okay, this can go bad, but I'll wait and see..."
As for those who think, "What was the point?" ...I'd like to point out that Demyx and Luxord serve no point besides fodder. ANYONE can take their roles in the game and just live longer. Hell, I can easily see Saix in Port Royal messing with the coins.
People who have the knee-jerk reaction of "Sue" bother me a bit, yes. There are valid reasons to not like a character and going on the opposite frame, you can dislike a character. It's when people jump all over you for not liking them that it's just as bad.
I didn't like somewhat of of personality, but eh-- that's me. :) She's a fine character, Repliku was amusing and irritating in his own ways as well. I don't care if she's the girl or the guy or how others reacted to her. She had a few interesting insights on how Nobodies are and can be created, too.
Not liking the character because s/he was "useless" and "won't exist beyond the game" is another thing entirely, and I have seen people use this against Xion. And when I bring up Repliku with this point, they just say, "Well, he's different." Nothing more.
What else would I say, dear? XD You just really EXPANDED on my rant.
Though the Axel is debatable. He really didn't seem interested in her at first, and later on, it can be debated that he's feeling very real fear of being alone (he's screwing shit up with Roxas, already burned bridges with Saix).

To the outsider seeing Xion attack Roxas, it would seem she's been reprogrammed.

And that's all you have to say about that? ;w; XP

And if Xion were real...
I'd totally do her.
Now I'm tempted to write something with the KH white mage based on one like that.
