Okay, as much as I hate seme/uke, which I do, a massive massive amount, it doesn't mean every gay couple ever switches off. Some of them do prefer being in one position over the other. There's a difference between top/pitcher and bottom/catcher and seme and uke, in that seme and uke are stereotypes created in Japanese culture and perpetuated in yaoi manga (and then fanfic). Top/pitcher and bottom/catcher are sex positions, and even then, top and bottom don't necessarily equate with whether you're being penetrated or not (although, as far as I know, pitcher and catcher do).
Basically, a little realism and good characterisation would be nice.
I don't mean to demand that every gay couple in fanfiction switch off every now and then, but I do demand that they stay in character no matter what. Because the only reason I even want to read that particular fanfic is BECAUSE of the character.
And honestly, if I'm chased away from almost every fanfic I read, I'm going to have to go back to playing Rockband. And then my neighbors will hate me. And then I'll blame bad fanfic authors. Which will start a vicious cycle of unhappiness. Please don't start the hate. ._.
That wasn't really directed at you. Although it was. Um. I have just seen this exact rant several hundred times (I've even done it myself), and the response always seems to be that of course all gay couples switch off, all the time. And that's just as bad, in my eyes, although not so annoying to stumble across in fanfic.
Personally I write most couples as switching, with the odd one or two where I think they have enough issues to have problems with being penetrated, and, like I said, I can't stand seme/uke, so I do agree with you. I was just adding a little sidenote, as it were.
