CoM is, if nothing else, exceptionally insightful regarding how Sora (and Riku) view various characters and events as compared to how the player viewed them. It's a fascinating game and the fact that it's so ill-regarded by a large chunk of the fandom makes me kinda sad.
...how does Leon feel about Sora being the keyblade's chosen? Do you think that maybe he'd sort of envisioned himself as the potential keyblade wielder?
Wasn't one of his lines in the Colosseum battles something to do with this? Or when he first met Sora and realised he was the Keyblade wielder? I might be getting confused - it's been a while since I played the first game - but I seem to recall there actually being some mention of him thinking Sora not 'up to par' (at least initially.)
Also, comment above. And yeah, it's implicit in Traverse Town. I believe he rather thinks that Sora stole it from its rightful owner. That's sort of why I mentioned it, because it's a plot thread I've never seen anyone delve deeper into and yet it's so very interesting (especially since Leon makes such a quick turn-around to help Sora).
This is just... you've hit on so many interesting and essential points for Leon's character that should be considered no matter what you're doing with him, whether it be RPing him or writing him or just plain discussing him. Simply spectacular, and very well thought-out. I've had hankerings to play him now and then, so this is definitely going in my mems.
I wish there were one of these for every character. XD
This was kind of the best thing I've read in a while. I agree on all counts-- actually, I feel like this is going to help me characterize Leon in the future. ^_^ Two thumbs up!
Honestly, it depends on what you like in a game - why you play.
If you're looking for a strong plot, no. If you're looking for an amazing battle system, no.
If you're looking for an interesting, customizable character growth system and a whole bunch of crazy, yes. My main criticism of FFVIII is that it tries to do too much and kinda falls flat. It's pretty much possible to have a level 100 party on the second disc (of 4) though monsters level up with you. The draw/junction system is interesting, though, and it basically means that no ones game will play the same way. The story tries really hard and can't really help from collapsing towards the end and the so-called romance element can feel exceptionally forced. But individually, the characters are all pretty likable and interesting.
(It's still available for $20 new so it's not exactly a major wallet-breaker.)

So do I. I think a full set would be an invaluable resource but this alone one took more time than I'd like to admit. ^^;
