summary: behind the scenes of Onew & Taemin's rainy blue performance at Tokyo Dome lies long weekends of practice and soft words shared under moonlight.
“Let’s do a duet performance. I’ll play piano, you sing.”
Jinki looks up from his book. “Why? You don’t want to sing together?”
Taemin smiles and shakes his head. “No. I want to make you shine instead.”
They start spending weekends together in the practice rooms, memorizing and re-memorizing sheet music and lyrics. Taemin’s fingers are shaky and hesitant across the black and white keys from months without practice, but Jinki is patient. He’s not having the easiest time either, the mix of English and Japanese words woven into the melody of the music not simple to learn. They sigh internally in exasperation, but then when they meet each other’s eyes, there is laughter at their shared lack of patience in reaching perfection.
It’s two weeks out to the concert and Jinki has the lines down. His voice, rich and clear, owns the words, makes the song his own. He sings of loneliness and sorrow, feelings he knows all too well. Then suddenly, Taemin’s hands slip up and the piano makes a sharp sound and the rhythm is broken.
“Sorry, hyung, I’m sorry, I thought I had it.”
Jinki brushes his fingers through Taemin’s hair. “Let’s go again,” he says.
This time, he plays perfectly. Jinki stands behind him, occasionally brushing a hand over his thin shoulder, and the warmth spreads through Taemin’s body like his favorite hot chocolate.
They run it a few more times, but not too many, because Jinki’s voice is a thing of value which must not be worn down. And after their third flawless run, Taemin picks his hands up off the piano keys and looks at them for a moment, then turns around and beams up at Jinki. His smile is blinding and a matching one stretches across Jinki’s face.
“That was perfect.” Jinki says.
Taemin nods. And before Jinki can even move Taemin is leaping up off the piano bench and wrapping his arms around his waist and tucking his chin over Jinki’s shoulder. “I can’t wait to make you shine at the concert. You’re going to be perfect.” And suddenly Jinki feels that yes, he will be amazing, because Taemin will be right behind him, supporting him through every note.
It’s the night before the concert and they’re all nervous. Jinki tells them all to at least try and get some sleep but he knows he’ll probably be tossing and turning all night long. He settles in for a long night of restlessness and hears someone knock faintly on the door.
“Come in.”
Taemin walks in, hair still ruffled and pajamas clinging to his narrow hips. “Hyung, I can’t sleep.”
“Yeah, me either.”
“Can we practice? Please?” And Jinki can tell from the way Taemin grips the side of his arm with his other hand and the way his eyes dart around that he is nervous, so nervous.
“Are the others already asleep?” Jinki asks.
“Out cold,” Taemin replies.
“Then yeah, let’s go.”
They play and sing just a bit more quietly than they would in an actual practice room, their performance illuminated by the clear moonlight filtering in through the window. There aren’t many stars, but they’re there, if only just, and the moon is big and bright. They perform for the celestial bodies in shades of silver and blue and white and black, and Jinki thinks that behind the piano, hair falling over his eyes, Taemin looks like the moon itself, bright and elegant, and soft.
He messes up once or twice, but they know it’s just because they’re sleepy and the lighting is poor. He giggles in apology and Jinki joins him on the bench. They stare out the large window, both appreciating its magical ability to transport them to a wider, prettier world in the night sky. Taemin yawns and without really realizing he does it, leans his head on Jinki’s shoulder. Jinki can’t help but laugh because he’s just so cute and wraps his arm around Taemin’s little waist and pulls him close.
“Think you can manage to sleep now?” he murmurs, voice deep and soothing.
Taemin barely stirs, nights of nervous sleeplessness catching up all at once. “Think so, don’t wanna move, you’re comfy.”
Onew can’t help himself. He presses a kiss to Taemin’s hair, long and sweet. “Go rest, baby. You’re exhausted.”
Taemin lifts his head up, eyes sleepy but full of light. “What about you? Are you going to sleep?”
Jinki nods. “Hopefully.”
Taemin pouts. He hates it when Jinki pretends to not be tired. He leans forward and presses their foreheads together. Their noses brush, their breaths mix in each other’s.
“If I kiss you, then will you be able to sleep?”
Jinki chuckles somewhere low in his throat. “Definitely not.”
“Too bad,” Taemin whispers, and then gently presses his lips against Jinki’s. Jinki presses back, heart beat rising. He wraps his other arm around Taemin’s waist and pulls him closer against his chest, gathering Taemin in his embrace. Taemin is thin and small in his arms and he arches his back inward to more fully press himself against Jinki’s body. Their lips meet and part for long, slow minutes and the sounds are heard by no one but them and the stars and moon.
Their heart beats rise but Taemin is losing the battle against his heavy eyelids and his head slumps back onto Jinki’s shoulder.
Jinki strokes his hair. “Go to sleep, little one.”
“Can I sleep with you?” Taemin groans, sleepiness slurring his speech.
“Sure.” And wordlessly, Jinki scoops him up into his arms, and Taemin groggily thinks to himself how wonderful it is that Jinki is strong enough to do that, and lets himself be carried bridal style to Jinki’s bed. He lays him down gently, strokes his hair once and presses a kiss to his forehead before walking to the other side and climbing under the covers to join Taemin.
He watches Taemin’s chest rise and fall slowly as he sleeps, watches the lines of worry and nerves and anxiety leave his face one by one as the moon rises higher and higher in the sky. He watches Taemin’s lips curve upward slightly, maybe during a nice dream. Jinki hopes it’s about him.
He watches for what could be minutes or hours and finally finds sleep, his and Taemin's fingers locked together for the night.
When he wakes up Taemin is smiling down at him, all sunshine and bright smiles. Maybe he’s more like the sun, Jinki thinks to himself.
“Good morning, hyung.”
Jinki pulls Taemin back down into the bed with one arm and buries his face in his neck. “More sleep please, need a teddy bear,” and Taemin laughs hysterically.
“Sorry, hyung, but today’s the concert, and we have to get ready now.”
Jinki opens his sleepy eyes. “So today’s the day.”
“Yes, today’s the day.” And Taemin leans in close, his breath ghosting over Jinki’s ear. “Today’s the day you will shine brighter than ever.”
