Marketing & Dealers Tables

Only tangentially related to my last post is something I've thought about when it comes to the price we charge for Dealer's Tables at Worldcons (and other conventions). I seem to recall that at ConJosé, our prices weren't too high, but we didn't include any memberships in the cost of the table, which meant we had dealers complaining about how ( Read more... )

They certainly do, and this preference is in some cases written into law. It's illegal in California to charge extra for a credit card, but it's legal to offer a cash discount.

I agree with you on this. Anime USA offers 2 memberships for the first booth and one after that(works best for an exhibit hall that we use), so it is a mute point for us.

Foolscap has always included a full membership with it's Dealer's Space (& priced accordingly) - it always just made sense...

Well, yes, but what about the would-be dealer who already has a membership? One of the reasons I've seen Worldcons (and Westercons) not include a membership in the table is because in those cases, you're selling people a membership they can't use because they already have one. Sure, they could sell the membership to someone else, but there's an element of unfairness to it nonetheless.
