Worldcon Chairs Party

Aug 11, 2008 02:00

I am once again being lazy and admitting that I probably will never get around to cleaning up my photos, so here is a photo dump of the Former Worldcon Chairs Party held on the final night of Denvention 3. This was the same room as the post-Hugo Party, and even with a lot fewer people in it, the room was very hot. People bailed out into the side ( Read more... )

Nope; too far south, given that Lisa wants to spend at least two days in the Reno area looking at potential sites to which to relocate. The plan is Georgetown Loop today and the Leadville, Colorado & Southern tomorrow, but it's still subject to change.

Arriving in Leadivlle, you will likely find the Leadville Colorado & Southern (http://leadville-train.com), another railroad that has scenic views, but is minus a trestle loop. Both GL and LC&S are diesel operations at this point.

Enjoy your trip!

That's why we're swinging south to Leadville. The actual motive power is no big deal. We're not exactly steam-heads -- if anything, we're more attracted to electric railroads. We have a family membership in (and Lisa is an active member of) the Oregon Electric Railway Museum, for instance.

The aussie's won 2010 Worldcon. Did Raleigh make it official on their NASFIC bid?

Raleigh did indeed officially announce their bid to hold the 2010 NASFiC. No other city announced, although sites technically have until 180 days prior to the start of Anticipation (where the election will take place) to file their bid.

Hey, great that the Georgetown Loop is still running; when I saw it in 2004 it was short of funds and in danger of closing. Glad to hear it's still around!

I haven't been following the story closely, but I think the line has a new operator who may have injected new funds into the operation.

Any group photos taken of Worldcon chairs?

(Or of the Fan Gallery exhibit?)

As it happens, Lisa ended up with no still photos of the Former Worldcon Chairs because she shot the video like she did last year. My primary computer is down, probably for the rest of the trip, and I'm therefore not in a position to even upload that video, which is very annoying.

The only time I was even near the photo exhibits, I did not have a camera with me.

It seems like many of the former chairs didn't get the word of the photo opportunity. This frustrating because there were lot of former chairs there. And before someone says, "You should have taken it at the party," I'll reply, "Then you miss the people who left on the last morning to catch their flights home." Also, usually the room in which the party is held is the wrong configuration for such a photo. This year was an exception, but how could we have known that?

"How could we have known that" -- well. (1) The list of living Worldcon Chairs is not very long, and could have been cross-referenced to the membership list. I think more past chairs attend than not, right? (2) Some of them are on the program and could be scheduled for "photo opportunity" and have that on their personal schedule. The rest could be, say, shoehorned into the program database anyway, and e-mailed or mailed their schedule with the photo opp time and place. (3) Was the room to be used for the party a complete surprise to everyone involved on the concom? It's not that hard to simulate a past-chairs photo -- just get 24 or 30 people to line up and see if three or four other people on the concom can get a good angle with their cameras.

In any event, it looks like something didn't get good follow-through. How can this be addressed at future Worldcons? Should the official WSFS Worldcon Nag Team remind the Worldcon to deal with it better?

Here's why I missed the photo op ...

I received the invite to party. It was a folded card with invites for additional people inserted. The first paragraph was about the party, my thumbs covered most of the second paragraph - which detailed the photo op. I didn't read beyond the party details - my fault. But, I will note that more often than not the photo op has been at the party.

I will note that Don Lundry was at the con and was lacking a ribbon.

Nothing like trying to herd past Worldcon chairs together, eh?
