I hope I didn't make you feel bad by more or less singling you out. I figured that if one person seemed to be drawing conclusions I hadn't intended, then other people probably were too. So I felt that I should make another post instead of just commenting on the reply so that I could clarify all around
( ... )
I think that any level of being able to resist the immense amount of advertising that is constantly thrown at us (TV or not) is very admirable. I also think your desire to take this to the point that you mentioned in your last post is really remarkable.
I have to say, I'm really glad that I don't really watch television either (though we do have one). The sheer quantity of ads, combined with the shallow, vapid messages they send drive me insane! Even so, I know that somewhere, my brain has registered that information and the damage has be done (so to speak).
It's funny, I find that my life is incredibly cluttered with "stuff", only a fraction of which is actually useful and brings me joy but I keep buying more! It's crazy! I think I might take a page out of your book and try to curb that with a specific vow/oath. ^_^
To be honest I haven't had cable in 3 years (and we very rarely watch TV other than on DVD). Lately we've sort of been not so good...
I just find computer stuff (esp. all these new multi-touch gadgets) really intersting. I wish they'd start designing these things to be useful longer and/or fully upgradeable and recyclable. But alas...
So from my perspective I guess I see the fact that I've had the same cell phone for 3-4 years, and that we always re-use computers in our house, to be an accomplishment. :)
