I feel like the point I was trying to make in my last post was undermined by the example I used and the detail into which I went ( Read more... )

Sorry if I misunderstood. I do find it challenging personally (not being cog in the consumerist wheels).

I hope I didn't make you feel bad by more or less singling you out. I figured that if one person seemed to be drawing conclusions I hadn't intended, then other people probably were too. So I felt that I should make another post instead of just commenting on the reply so that I could clarify all around ( ... )

I think that any level of being able to resist the immense amount of advertising that is constantly thrown at us (TV or not) is very admirable. I also think your desire to take this to the point that you mentioned in your last post is really remarkable.

I have to say, I'm really glad that I don't really watch television either (though we do have one). The sheer quantity of ads, combined with the shallow, vapid messages they send drive me insane! Even so, I know that somewhere, my brain has registered that information and the damage has be done (so to speak).

It's funny, I find that my life is incredibly cluttered with "stuff", only a fraction of which is actually useful and brings me joy but I keep buying more! It's crazy! I think I might take a page out of your book and try to curb that with a specific vow/oath. ^_^

To be honest I haven't had cable in 3 years (and we very rarely watch TV other than on DVD). Lately we've sort of been not so good...

I just find computer stuff (esp. all these new multi-touch gadgets) really intersting. I wish they'd start designing these things to be useful longer and/or fully upgradeable and recyclable. But alas...

So from my perspective I guess I see the fact that I've had the same cell phone for 3-4 years, and that we always re-use computers in our house, to be an accomplishment. :)

dude, you're doing just fine. juuuuuuust fiiiiine. seriously.

and gadget ads are designed to be so sleek and sexy and full of want. for those who are into that sort of thing, it gets them right in their achilles heel.

N and I have been lamenting how disposable all this new technology is, lately, too. Isn't it just awful?? what happened to things lasting for years and being easily repaired? what gives, Capitalism? Grr.
