But that doesn't stop me from saying that I am a huge admirer of the way that you guys are parenting, which falls well into the way I did ... read everything, think critically, and follow your gut.

awww, thank you! *warm fuzzies*

lol, the CIO rant will happen alongside the co-sleeping post i don't have time to write.

congrats on spawning and raising brilliant swans :)

hopefully we'll see them again soon!

I've encountered a lot of women who have bought into the formula hype and the idea that formula is sufficient, and breastfeeding is something "extra" you can do if you feel like it, BUT. It's really sad.

Also: current rates of breastfeeding in Canada are, according to Health Canada, 73% at birth, with only 31% still being breastfed at six months. So that should answer your question as to whether this is a mainstream issue; 1 in 4 Canadian women never breastfeed at all, and less than a third are breastfeeding at six months. (At 7 months, it drops to 27%.)

Gah, toddler on lap. That should have been "but you don't have to breastfeed, and it's okay if you don't."

Sadly, the polls suggest that indeed, a lot of mainstream women even think that formula is *better* for the baby (25% was the figure my friend told me she read in some parenting magazine. We were AGHAST. She is mainstream, but she totally breastfed for a year, because she's not dumb.)

YAY for dreads!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Post pictures! They will be puffy and crazy looking at first, but I think you will love them!

i think i know one of the coworkers you are talking about. L is a real proponent of breast-feeding, so for her birthday, when we were all sitting around the staff room table eating cake, she whipped out a picture of her breast-feeding her son! she said he'd probably kill her if she knew he brought it, but she wanted to show how beautiful breast-feeding is (she knew that coworker was having doubts about it). gotta love L, eh? :)

yeah, i think i scared L and M yesterday after L mentioned bringing in a photo because there were doubts. I said that if a woman *chooses* to formula-feed and doesn't research/look into it, I'd consider it neglect and child abuse. they looked a little freaked after i said that.

it's not 2nd best; it's 4th best, according to the WHO. imagine looking your gorgeous new baby in the eyes and telling him/her, i'm going to give you 4th best, sweetie.

a lot of women didn't know better when WE were babies, but there's absolutely no excuse for such ignorance now. if they can find facebook on the internets, they can google breastfeeding. everybody loses when a mother chooses not to breastfeed.

the 2 that L mentioned were K & B, btw.

and that first link, while poorly formatted, is an excellent and realistic comparison of the two.

so now you can consider yourself even further armed and informed. :)
