Tomorrow, tehjos is gonna come over and dread my hair. She deserves a lollipop and then some. I'm ever so grateful. yay! Yay for dreads and yay for being able to wear my hair down.

Also tomorrow, dyslexia is a comin' by for to hang and to help a little with A and whatnot. I look forward to the extra company.

yay for seeing two fiends I don't get to spend nearly enough time with. Woohoo!

Today was A's 4-month doctor visit. He weighs 15lbs and is 25.5 inches tall. Doctor's advice: keep doing what you're doing. Yay!

I also stopped by CCFC to see work peoples. Got to see roxy_fondue in da flesh (instead of virtually, which is how I normally see her) and got to see S, whom I haven't seen since I went on maternity leave in May. She was MIA last time I visited.

Question: Apparently there are a couple of women at my place of employment who are unsure whether breastfeeding is the way to go or whether they'll formula feed when they have children. Is this an actual concern for mainstream women or are these two just stupid? I'm serious here. Damn near all of my friends are not part of the mainstream, so I don't honestly know if this is still a valid question for many women.

Breast or Bottle?

How language undermines breastfeeding

Breast isn't best - it's the normal way feed babies. As Diane Wiessenger wrote in her essay, Watch Your Language, "Because breastfeeding is the biological norm, breastfed babies are not "healthier"; artificially-fed babies are ill more often and more seriously. Breastfed babies do not "smell better"; artificial feeding results in abnormal and unpleasant odor that reflects problems in an infant's gut."

She continues, "When we fail to describe the hazards of artificial feeding, we deprive mothers of crucial decision-making information." And that's a key point. Rather than promoting the benefits of breastfeeding, we need to shift the emphasis to the dangers of formula feeding.

I've been making food. yay!

Sunday, I mulled cider with lots of allspice berries, whole cloves, cassia bark, and a sliced navel orange. It was absolute heaven, especially the mulled orange slices. Holy fuck, were they ever amazing!

Monday, we were going to make borscht, but that got put off until Tuesday. I ended up making roasted root vegetables with fenugreek, coriander, and ginger, steeped in mulled cider from the day before and orange juice, and chicken with onions, lime juice, and ginger. Oh so fucking good! Yay for food experimentation!

Tuesday, misslynx made borscht and it was super yummy!

Wednesday was fend-for-yourselves/leftovers.

And tonight, I made chili. I had soaked kidney beans and cooked them a couple of days ago so that they could be added to the chili tonight. First time soaking dried beans. It took some planning, but I'm glad I did it. I feel confident that I wouldn't starve to death if all I had were water and dried beans, er, and a pot and a stove on which to cook them.

In my bowl of chili, I added a square of Green & Black's organic dark chocolate with ginger. It was yummy.
