Ok, this is random and a little mean, but I love that DMC canonically states that on Will and Elizabeth's wedding day, Jack is nowhere near them, much less secretly attending due to personal invitation. Just a little "Booyah!" to all the fans who think that Jack actually likes the whelps and vice versa. Jack is wary of Elizabeth and bored by Will.

Oh, definitely! Jack's amused by Elizabeth, and sees a lot of himself in her: "Peas in a pod" "pirate", but I think that's also why he's a little wary. I think he realizes that Elizabeth is more ruthless and dangerous than he is.
The end of AWE though, where Jack does step in to 'save' Will
Ok, there is room to say that Jack is fond of Will; moreso than Elizabeth, certainly, and Jack has a certain amount of fondness leftover from Bootstrap. Mostly though, it goes back to Jack being generally a nice person who doesn't want to see people die. Also, Davy Jones needed to be killed, and Jack wasn't so sure he wanted to do it (he was hesitating before Will got stabbed) so really, it just worked out to everyone's advantage.
I think that Jack's base "setting" so to speak is to like people and (before he was mutineed upon) trust them. So he likes you until you do something he doesn't like, as opposed to, say, Barbossa who doesn't like anyone until they do ( ... )

I wasn't even going to say "Nuh-UH" but then you said it and I had to!
Jack is so off-beat that I don't think he even realizes that he has a moral code.I like that ( ... )

You have to look at dysfunctional siblings. Often times, the younger sibling doesn't admire the older, but tries to out do them to prove their worth or in spite. You have to admit, in a family with Will and Jack, boooooyyyy would it be dysfunctional. Also the age difference would be sort of like Will growing up an only child, with Jack reappearing and trying to take control that he's not use to relinquishing to anyone.
As far as Jack claiming responsibility, I use that loosely, seeing that "responsibility" isn't Jack's strongest suit. I feel that Jack kind of thinks, "I brought you here, I guess I should help you get out." Any examples of Jack sticking his neck out for Will in CotBP I can think of right now can also be used for Jack's own self-serving purposes... I need to review DMC more, because everything is fuzzy there.

Although I really, really like the brother metaphor applied to Will and James, where James takes his big-brother position very seriously and Will adores his older brother, but eventually grows up and becomes his own person and James accepts that, but still pushes Will around when he's out of line.
Will and Jack? STEPBROTHERS! Or half brothers! Some sort of disconnect there, to explain why they're so radically different and why Will is resentful of Jack.
