Pic, party, Angel, and more

Weird pic of the day: Suddenly he was feeling a bit unwell...I have spent most of the weekend sleeping, since I was up late at the Queer Party Friday and had a bit to drink. The first two hours of the party, I was working in the wardrobe section with a German exchange student. Not to many people came to hang up their coats, so we were bored. Thus ( Read more... )

I have to say I always liked Wesley even as the goofy, pathetic caricature he was in Buffy S3. On his first eps of Angel he was still much the bumbling, comic relief, although with a much needed courage in the mix, I was sorta ambivalent with his character by then (I`ve never really allowed myself to get attached to Doyle, since I knew he was going to die pretty soon anyway). I think the point I`ve really started to think "hey this guy`s not only the most interesting character of the show, he`s also *gasp* damn sexy" was by the middle of S2 when Wes was in a wheelchair after being shot and he stood up to Angel when he sort of threatened Cordy, opening a few stitches in the way. I know it`s silly, but there it is. Nothing like seeing our man hurt and being brave about it. *g* Of course, by the time Angel tried to choke him in the hospital in S3 I was already lost and cursing Angel`s name for being such an asshole. ;)

Well, if it's going to take until mid-season 2 I suppose I'd better teach myself patience. :-) But at least you, like me and like Padma, didn't *dis*like him from the start, and that's always a good sign. I mean, there were Wesley-must-die dart boards back in the day.

Suddenly I`m getting all protective of my poor Wes. How could anyone wish him dead? I mean he wasn`t always the three dimensional character he grew out to be on Angel, but he was such a lovable one as the conceited but awkward Watcher. Plus, he`s English! I realize that not everyone shares my attraction for English men, but c`mon. I think Gile`s sexy too.

Anyway, I think Alexis Denisof is a great actor and was an excellent addiction to the cast, he doesn`t stand out much but he provides that calm assurance amd equilibrium the show desperately needed between two larger than life characters such as Angel and Cordelia. Is the story about Glenn Quinn (Doyle) causing problems on the set because of his addiction to drugs and alcohol true? People say that`s the real reason he left the show. I only learned some days ago that he died in 2002. It`s sad really, he was a fine actor too.

The web hatred for Wes was quite astounding in its day - I remember seeing him on Buffy for the first time after being thoroughly spoiled and going, "But he's *funny*!" And I dug up the dart board - it's still around. Look here! And Giles is way sexy ( ... )

It's getting quite obvious that I'm never going to see Angel on TV4, because I don't watch TV at two in the mornings.

Word to that. I mean, honestly! If they can show re-runs of C/o Segemyhr and Nya Tider in the afternoons, then what the hell is up with this in the middle of the night time? Nobody is awake at that time, except my severely depressed friend who can't sleep. She tells me it's a decent show.

I remember that Buffy used to be on right after school, when they showed it. I get that their prime times are filled with important documentaries about midgets and fat people, but those hours between school - dinner - evening is made for shows they don't know if the audience will like or not.

*slays tv4 for being full of shit and Idol 2004*

The only reason I can think of why they don't air it in the afternoons is that they're afraid it will scare the children - after all, that's why TV5 have mutilated Buffy. But there's a nice little past-prime time slot at ten/eleven-ish that would suit Angel just fine. Anything after midnight seems like a waste of material. Reruns of the A-team at two am? Fine. Angel? Not fine.

Apparently TV4 cannot air Angel before nine o'clock at night, they showed Buffy in the afternoon when it first appeared in Sweden and some parents reported them and they lost the case, so there's a ruling that they can't air those shows before nine o'clock. On the otherhand that does not excuse the sucky after midnight slots both Buffy and Angel got.
Since Channel 5 is airing from London, they have different laws to abide and they can show Buffy in the afternoon, in the children-friendly form that was used when it aired in England. And then the "real" episode later at night. Even though it's a cut version, I'm thankful that they have put some effort in the show and promoting it, which TV4 never did.
And here endeth my rant *lol*

That kind of explains it, then. Just kind of, since there's all that time between nine and midnight, but still.

And Danish kids must be so resilient, seeing how they've been able to see all seven seasons of Buffy without getting harmed. :-)

I actually liked Wes from Buffy... I liked them showing a guy like Xander, but who just didnt fit in as he was. I liked how they took it further in Angel. It toook a cerew like Angel's for Wesley to find a home.

It really did. I can't help but wonder what he could have done in Sunnydale if anyone had made any real effort to try and make him fit in. But of course, that's not something they're known for doing.

I was hooked when Wesley said 'A father doesn't have to be a demon to terrorise his children.' That was the first sign I had that there was something more to Wesley than his appearance - that the writers had given him a background that was, possibly, terrible. It made him fit in more with the others - who had seen and lived through terrors of their own. Before that, his apparent innocence and clumsness made him too much the buffoon who had no clue what was really going on and who would never truly understand 'evil'.

But in that one comment, the way he said it without thinking, and the way he covered for having said it, gave him a layer of depth that matched the rest of the characters, and the show itself.

Then he got scruffy, and the lust took over. ;-)

Yeah, that ep was when I really started to pay attention too - for the first time, Wesley wasn't even remotely comic relief, he was genuinely haunted, and thus it was more obvious that he was being brave.

And it says so much about him, really. All that pompous strutting he did on Buffy - he was trying to be the Watcheriest Watcher that ever Watched, and all it did was make Buffy clump him together with the Council and dismiss him right off. Which made him more insecure, and more pompous, and it's a vicious circle.

There are times when I want to lock his dad under the stairs, and see how he likes it...

Wehn was Wes likeable...hm..I actually can't remember when I came to that conclusion. I'm guessing in the end of season 1.
If I only had the money...I would also get season 2 asap. *sigh* I love season 2.

Season 2 is love and cookies. :-)

And it's tricky with Wesley, because every time you think you know him, he shows a new side. So there really is never a time when I can give up and go "Oh, she's never going to like him" if she doesn't come around.
