Trivialities

It's a shame that I spent most of today stuck inside a car. The weather in DC was gorgeous, especially in the park by my house. I always forget until I go back in the spring how beautiful the neighborhood is. No other place I've seen has sky that's as blue as the sky there, or grass that's as green. There are cloudy and gray days, of course, ( Read more... )

My dear, you probably know this but Mika is not British at all, he is in fact from one of those countries we NEVER see popstars emerging from, but I forget its name, now. Which leads us neatly into the question of exoticism and sexual ambiguity, esp when it comes to Eastern exoticism.

I really want to write a book about Orientalism, sexual ambiguity and rock n roll one of these days.

Yeah, half-Lebanese, half-American by birth. He doesn't actually even have a British accent, but I thought I'd classify him by his country of origin in terms of where his music's coming from. :-D

So, uh, yeah. I have a thing for curly haired Semitic boys. Is it too painfully obvious?

That's another way he follows Freddie, though: British-but-really-from-the-Other.

Yes, I think that´s why people keep comparing him to Freddie, really. I don´t know, I rather like his music but not ENOUGH, you know. He is camp, but not ENOUGH. Yet I don´t feel he´s too subtle for me. It is rather insane-making.

Hee! One day you and I will find our swarthy curly-haired butt-boys and be happy.

Well, there's that one I know who's totally cute, but, you know, gay. As it goes.

YOU are so gay.

Now, let's convince these gay boys of this! My seeekrit plan is to start dressing in drag and see whether they fall for it.

Though I think my favorite qualification of my sexuality was when someone saw a photo of Marc Bolan and asked me if I was a lesbian. And that was just perfect.

bandit_de_coeur April 3 2007, 13:14:29 UTC
no, i wouldn't guess lesbian. as i said yesterday--a drag queen in a woman's body. i'm pretty sure you are a gay man.

Mika was on Jay Leno about a week ago... he was pretty adorable. And his guitarist dresses like a bunny.
I feel somewhat compelled to like him just because of this.

... not many journalists are saying anything about the debt his vocal stylings owe to Michael Jackson, who must've also influenced him.

. . . and they've also passed over the cat whose tail got trapped in the tumble dryer, whose influence is quite overbearing.

Sorry, I'm feeling mean today.

In order to be less mean, I'll congratulate you on discovering '70s Queen, who are indeed excellent and more self-consciously playful with their songs than their overblown '80s 'cock rock' counterparts. (I'm going for my record of facile opinions contained within a single post here.) All the albums I think Wabbit mentioned are fun and flirty, though '39 is something of an anomaly in their catalogue. What else?

You picked one of the two Scissor Sisters tracks I can stand. (The other is 'Laura'.)

Jake Shears is kinda hot, but Freddie (heck, even Jacko) possesses far greater pulchritude than mousey-voiced Mika.

Hahah, his live voice does need a bit of practice to get some power and meatyness behind it, but I think the studio cuts aren't bad!

I never found Freddie particularly attractive. I like Mika's looks because he resembles several other boys I've liked. But we differ in our taste in men, anyhow.

that's adorable about the lemonade stand. i love it too when they charge like 25 cents and then when you give them a whole dollar, they freak out.

kaiser chefs had one other decent song, called like na na na na or something, but the rest is not that great. and i totally agree with you about scissor sisters. someone gave me tickets to see them at the shrine here in LA last year and i was bored to tears. they have a couple fun songs and "return to oz" is really beautiful, but the rest is just too techno euro beat gay club for me. i met lance bass and his reality show bf at that concert, which was funny and we took pictures together, and he was sooooo sweet. it made me feel (a little bit) guilty about having made fun of him for the last 12 years...

Ah, I am glad to hear that! Because everyone seems to be all over the Scissor Sisters, and I just think... yeah, "techno euro beat gay club," exactly.

The kids didn't ask for 25 cents, technically they asked for "money!" hah, but I gave them a dollar.
