You are a brave, brave man. You an Mitch should definitely get together over tea to kvetch about these experiences! I definitely think subbing is an entirely different animal than the regular gig.
Can you talk to your financial aid department about getting some unsubsidized staffords, or something else, to cover the difference? I used to run into the same problem where I'd get very little money after going back to school when I'd been working. Luckily, lots and lots of places will pay your student loans if you're a teacher, so rack it up! You could always try third-party private loans, too...Ugh.
Good show. In cases where the sub is rotated through for a lot of time...you did what you could. How can these kids learn anything without a proper set of objectives? So, Denver will only pay once per month to a long term sub? Or is that if you take more of a position? Remember to reinforce good behavior when you see it! Don't just focus on the bad...if these kids are messed up it could be the whole any attention is better than none...so dish out the good for good behavior and be quick with the bad for bad behavior. Read "The First Days of School" by Harry Wong. He is a bit totalitarian...but it works
