I haven't been following Karneval much except for the scanlations, but I think your theory of Karoku being a scientist is right --- and the "bad guys" have probably recruited him because of that. I mean, aren't they researching evolution? And so, since their aim is to create(?) people with abnormal abilities, they may be in need of Karoku's help. However, he probably hasn't told them of Nai, but they may have figured it out themselves that Nai is somehow related to Karoku. (But how does "being blood-related" explain why they can sense each other's feelings and communicate telepathically? o___o)
B-uut, I really don't think Karoku is a good guy. It seems to me as if he's just using Nai as an "experiment" and probably doesn't want to "share" Nai with anyone else (i'm poking the possessive-about-work-scientist stereotype here). I think it was out of genuine worry that Gareki might indeed end up caught in some evil if he stays near Nai I at least don't think he's that nice to worry about someone he doesn't even know
( ... )
"being blood-related" explain why they can sense each other's feelings and communicate telepathically? This is just an idea. They're both seem to have some special abilities and the blood somehow connects them?
Hm, I used to think Karoku is evil too, but... It's just that chapter 19 convinced me otherwise :)
at least don't think he's that nice to worry about someone he doesn't even know He seems sointerested in Gareki, though. It's stated somewhere later. I get the feeling he's like an adult Nai, and Nai cares about others.
Thank you for the comment :D You made me reconsider some things...
I feel I've discussed most of this with you already, but still. I agree with these being plausible theories. I also don't support the idea of him having lost his memory, though it wasn't a horrible guess at the time we didn't know anything about him at all.
"What exactly made Karoku disappear?" This is the one I am really not at all sure about. It just seems so unlikely that it was the group he is with now that did it, but it's possible that the CEO's people found him in a bad state. Where does the Circus I.D. fit into this? Another concern is how much of a good guy Karoku really is. I'm 50/50 on this for now, but I do believe he doesn't want the group he is with to find Nai. I'm just wondering why he wants Nai to come to him and to find him alone, as in sans Gareki, if he also wants to keep Nai away from the CEO's people... with whom he happens to be.
re: Bandages. If you look at the character profiles, you'll see everyone has their weapons/symbols (except for Yogi?) associated with them illustrated in the bar with their names.

I'm just wondering why he wants Nai to come to him and to find him alone, as in sans Gareki, if he also wants to keep Nai away from the CEO's people... with whom he happens to be. He doesn't say anywhere he want him to come to him. There's this misleading line where he's saying "Why aren't you focused on me?", but I think he means that Nai is thinking about Gareki at that moment. The ID is a mystery, hence I wait for Score 22 to explain what those bracelets are...
The bandages have a meaning, I'm quite sure, but I just don't know what? But why did he have them in Nai's memories? D: Nai eats the poor butterflies XD
Healing powers, hm. Makes sense... I need to think about it some more.
speaks in a peculiar mannerDo you mean that "If I melt in this light (...)" or...? Btw, I actually think this a really, really sad line. It sounds a bit like his predicting his own death. Though I'm not sure. Just an idea. I sorta had this image of him being made of ice. The ice melts slowly in the light, but when it's suddenly warm then it melts even
( ... )
Hm. There's no way to tell if he means at that moment or in general, is there? Japanese is such an ambiguous language, but I think I'll agree with you there. In any case I think Mikanagi is trying very hard hard to obscure his intentions, for whatever reason. I've said this before, but I don't think he's full of ill intent, though he might not be entirely innocent.
Well, I'm aware that they are niji staple food, but it still makes me curious because they are featured in most situations where there's a Karoku, also countless other instances. Seems like such an innocent thing, but I keep expecting it to hint to something else. Suppose we'll know with time.
& just putting the theory out there; I still have to think about it. Do you mean he didn't have them (going by the ch. 11 flashback)? I noticed this, too. It's one of the plot holes I mentioned. Still, he's always wearing them now despite having healed fully.
Yeah, that line. "If I melt in this light... then will I shed tears, when it's warm?" I was thinking more of metaphorical
( ... )
"It's all right to burst into tears out of happiness, right?" This is my interpretation of that line, so it might be off :( You may have noticed shirokuro translated it literally as "You should have lots of fun and cry". Depending on if he's good or evil you can interpret in both ways, I guess. I assume he's good, so I think he acutally means that you cry when you're sad, but there are also times when you cry, because you're happy. He wants Nai to be happy, so he's sending Tsukumo back to him.
What exactly made Karoku disappear? I have a complex theory about this: Firstly I think he was hiding in that forest. Why? because he stole the ID. He was lonely and met with a hurt/dying kiri and turned him human for the sake of company. Later, some people tracked him down (after the ID) and he had to flee (or maybe he was dragged back to those people he seems to be working with
( ... )
I like your theory about why he disappeared! With it in mind I'd ask myself exactly how and why he would steal a bracelet ... for power? To examine it? Something else...?? And turning a niji into human for company alone is a bit. I don't know... cruel, isn't it? Ah, but I still like your theory.
Oh and I think what you pointed out about Karoku targeting Gareki ALONE compared to Tsukumo made me realize it's.... true. I mean I knew Karoku had something against Gareki, but I didn't really think about it that way before. I think Gareki knows why he's being targeted, though... he seemed to realize it way back in chapter 8 when he had that serious talk with Nai, but WHAT he realized was never revealed! Augh.
I read a translation of chapter 19 where karoku is kinda happy to hear Nai scream
Haha! I remember reading that for the first time and thinking, "wow, why is he so happy about Nai screaming?" lmfao. Now after looking it over I don't think he's happy about it, he's telling him to scream more so that he can hear him more/better. But
( ... )
Maybe he wanted the bracelet to try and enter circus? Thank you ^^
Lol I forgot that scene. I just thought that gareki had simply realized that Nai's sudden pain was because of karoku. But i wonder if he did realize something else...
" but I think poor Karoku's words are just easily misunderstood." XD true.
"hiding in the forest" <--- sounds interesting :D Though how was it possible for him to hide there that long? I mean... I think Nai is at least 1 year old, so...?
I don't think Karoku knows there are other people around Nai. He sounded a bit surprised hearing Nai scream "Tsukumo-chan"... It leads me to think he doesn't know about anyone near Nai other than Gareki. Ah... I think I know now why he attacked Gareki, but I don't know if I should spoil it here? XD
I don't think he's happy...? He wants Nai to scream louder, cause he can't hear him clearly?
Just a note I'd like to add is... well, here when Gareki thinks he knows why Karoku wants him to stay away he says "are you trying to start a fight?"
... a fight over what! Does Gareki think Karoku wants the bracelet for himself or...? Hm. I think it's possible that Karoku feels Nai could only be safe with himself because he was the one that made him, and wants no one else to seize his creation... mmm, it's hard to say.
Hmmm... This is just Gareki's impression. I think he felt somewhat "pushed away" from Nai by Karoku :3 Like... When a stranger deliberatly pushes you for no reason, wouldn't you think he wants to start a fight?
I think circus knew about him because: a) of the stolen ID or b) because he's been working with the 'bad people' for a long time (aka before meeting/creating Nai)
I thought Karoku's problem with gareki was due to his past too but after I reading chapter 12 (I think it's 12) where gareki tells the other his past, I just couldn't see anything extraordinary. Plus in chapter 21 (spoilerwarning!!!) a guy tells gareki he's only with circus to make nai happy (end of spoilers)
I meant when Gareki was with his parents, before he arrives to Kurasuna =).
And I think that the guy (i hate...xD) who told him that he´s only with Circus to make Nai happy said that only because he doesn´t like Gareki...But maybe it could be a clue =).

Yeah, maybe the reason why his parents sold him is important to the plot? I really hope so.
Urg, I hate that guy too but I think he was telling a bit of the truth, gareki hasn't been useful once since they joined Circus
