Probably a mixture of both..I like museums...but my family does not! They would be more apt to visit local attractions.

yaaa if you're meaning you want to explore kansas city.... hit up the plaza (it's just shopping, but it's a touristy thing).... liberty memorial... union station isn't free, but they have several exhibits depending on what you want to see... i think the nelson-atkins is free? they have a newish add on over there, too. there's also the kemper museum a few blocks from there, not sure on its cost.

Yes, the Nelson-Atkins Art Museum is always free to enter.

I'm sure you're aware, but I'll reiterate - Kansas City and Lawrence are, depending on route, driver, specific destination in the metro, about 30 min to 1 1/2 hours apart.

Also, in August, it's terrible out. It's not that it's unbearably hot (although it usually is), it's that it's unbearably humid. I'd view any expedition that will take you outside as spending an equivalent amount of time at the gym. A couple hours at the zoo will wipe you out.

Pittsburgh can be pretty hot, too.

Depending on how you do with the heat, take some water, wear a hat and sunscreen. You'll be fine.

I've never done much checking into it, but I guess you're right. The temp is higher, but the humidity (which is what kills me, personally) is much closer than I thought it would be. (Mind you, I don't know why - I spent 6 weeks in Morgantown, WV during summer - 50ish miles from Pittsburgh. why I didn't put two and two together until just now is beyond me.)
