New to KC - Any ideas?

I am moving from Pittsburgh, PA to Lawrence Kansas in August. My parents are helping me move and will be spending the first two weeks with me, partly to help me unpack and partly to vacation. Since the move is going to cost a lot, we are looking for cheap things to do in KC. We were thinking of spending a few days of the first two weeks exploring the city. Any suggestions?
