Apprehensions about moving to KCMO

May 15, 2008 21:56

Hi, my name is Seevan. I'm 25 and have lived in Kansas all my life, except for the years I spent going to college in Florida. I have been accepted to graduate school at UMKC and it makes sense to move to Missouri to start gaining in-state tuition. I'm embarrassed to say that I really don't know much about the Plaza/Midtown/Downtown areas, being a ( Read more... )

Brookside would be perfect for you. There are a string of apartments around Main and Brookside Boulevard starting around 53rd st. I think El Camino is a popular one.

Thanks, I will look into them. I may just have to drive around and write down names and numbers because Craigslist and other apartment sites only list so much.

I believe UMKC allows Johnson County residents to receive in state tuiton. Not that that means you shouldn't move, but I do think it's true.
Look here:

Or call the tuition office.

yes, they do. but i would encourage you to live in the city to reduce the travel and such. you could also take the bus and avoid having to pay 95 flippin dollars (or more) a semester to park!

i used to live in a knaack apartment and never had problems. that just varies depending on the exact location of the apartment, though (the way KC is is that one block on a street will be fine but the next block may not be. strange, but i've NEVER had a problem).

i currently live in tax-credit housing downtown and love it (if you're interested i can provide you with the number to my leasing people, too). i walk all over the place all of the time (plus, grocery store very soon!)... i've had no problems here, either, and it would be very easy for you to take the bus to campus (i went to UMKC myself).

and if you wanna chat more since i've lived all over and gone to UMKC the entire time i've lived here, just get in touch :)

Downtown tax credit stuff is nice but you're not SUPPOSED to go to school full time while living in the unit unless I think one person in the household isn't full time....i think, don't quote me. In any case, you have to meet income guidelines (can't make over like 28k and some change for a single person)

I like living downtown...walk most places...I like living in a multi family building, I feel pretty safe here. I am also a small girl myself and was worried about the area but it isn't TERRIBLE...Austin is better, but it isn't TOO bad!

Oh I thought you didn't like it there? I'm supposed to move to QH Towers but depending on certain things, I either can't move at all, or I might move to a loft downtown. So I wanted to hear your thoughts on the lofts there.

I moved from KCMO down to Southern JoCo, I think the only difference is that in KCMO I was harassed by ignorant minorities and kids in dire need of a good spanking, and in southern JoCo I get harassed by ignorant rednecks and kids in dire need of a good spanking. ::shrug:: All that really changed was the funny ways they talked, and the radio stations they listen to.

Anything closer to campus is going to be a generally nicer area. I try to avoid areas thick with apartments and townhomes, the higher density tends to let people act as more of a 'faceless' part of a mob, no matter how nice the neighborhood. Granted, this is still a problem in the nicer subdivisions, but it is easier to track down and smack down a few rogue kids in a subdivision than in a mega-apartment complex.

I would recommend looking at the 39th Street West area. I'm a single female in my 20s and have lived here for four years now (and been attending grad school at UMKC most of that time). I've never had any safety issues and have really enjoyed living over here. I'm getting ready to move and I'm kind of going to miss this neighborhood. I'm definitely going to miss being able to walk to Minsky's whenever I want a good pizza!
