Apprehensions about moving to KCMO

Hi, my name is Seevan. I'm 25 and have lived in Kansas all my life, except for the years I spent going to college in Florida. I have been accepted to graduate school at UMKC and it makes sense to move to Missouri to start gaining in-state tuition. I'm embarrassed to say that I really don't know much about the Plaza/Midtown/Downtown areas, being a ( Read more... )

Hi there! I just got accepted to UMKC for graduate school, too. Which program are you going to do?

There are a lot of housing options near UMKC. I'd suggest Brookside or South Plaza. Many old houses have apartments in them and these are nice neighbourhoods. The last time I rented was in Hyde Park, years ago, and that sucked. Brookside is really nice...lots of locally owned stores, as well as two lovely places for coffee: Bella Napoli & Roasterie.

Not to dissuade you from coming over to KC, but isn't there a metro tuition rate for KC? You might want to check into that.

I'm in the masters program for counseling and guidance. There is no metro rate for grad students, at least not for my program. I have to do the Midwest Exchange Program, which is 150% of in-state tuition, i.e. still more than I'd like to be paying. Thanks for the suggestions.

I live in Rockhill Ridge, which is right around Rockhurst and UMKC, just east of Brookside. There are some houses split into apartments along Harrison just north of 55th, and there are also apartments along Rockhill Rd, specifically 60th-65th. Probably more spotted around the area.
There are lots of apartments surrounding the Plaza as well. Not just south, but west and north.

I live on Rockhill and there are houses and apartments for rent you could check out. It's safe here. I've never had a problem.

Also, here's a link. Look at the top building. I believe it's still pretty reasonable to live there and it's in a nice area. It isn't really walking distance from UMKC, but it's a short drive or bus ride. Looks like there are other places that might be nice too. I have never dealt with Chief Realty, but they might be a good source to find something. Good luck!

actually, can I strike that comment about the top image on that site? Totally wrong. I was thinking it was one of the buildings that are along Brookside road, off of Meyer Boulevard.

Here's yet another link to a picture. Hope that helps.

The only thing I've found about living downtown KCMO is that folks in JoCo perceive the area as being dangerous and those perceptions get perpetuated further and further until people are afraid that if they go downtown they'll be shot or robbed or raped or...

KCMO is fine. Really. As a single girl you know to watch yourself wherever you go. JoCo or KCMO or small-town KS. You have to be careful. Just find a good place. Brookside is great. Westport is awesome. I live in a loft downtown and love it. Quality Hill is beautiful. The Rivermarket is super-fun on the weekends.

Yeah, it's hard to break associations I've had since I was young. It's sad, but now I have to learn for myself where to go and how to live alone.
