A non-raining day in fall, in Mizusato? Crazy! Juudai by now had gotten used to the constant gray in the sky, the mists and drizzles and rains that make up this northern island. It was really nice in the summer, but man, he'd underestimated how fast it would get wet and cold up here.

Such a nice day deserved a walk, and so Juudai was strolling up and down the streets doing his shopping, stocking up on staples like rice and cured meat. (They had been living well on fish, but Asuka had mentioned they should probably start storing up food in case winters were harsh here. Probably a good idea.) With his red duffel slung over his shoulder, now quite battered after its days traveling in both his world and now in Kannagara, Juudai turned past the ryokan and paused to appreciate the landscaped gardens, and the plumes of steam rising from the hot springs out back.

And there was a man playing solitaire. Badly. Wait, Juudai recognized him. Who was that guy...?

{ Harry Dresden, } Yubel supplied at the back of his head. { The wizard ( ... )

Harry glanced up and gave Juudai a warm smile. He hadn't seen very many people outside of those who lived at the ryokan recently. The rain had sort of prevented him from wandering out, except when he needed to get to work. Which sucked since he had yet to find this world's version of an umbrella. Either way, it was nice to have someone else around. Before he could stop himself, his usual amused sarcasm which had been bottled up all this time slipped out.

"I like to think of it as mastering the art of luck and brilliance while manipulating 52 pieces of paper with various pictures and numbers on them. But yeah, I'm playing cards."

{ I like him. } Yubel would, of course.

"Luck and brilliance, huh?" Juudai grinned cheekily. "Pretty easy to be lucky and brilliant when playing by yourself, huh?"

He slid his deck from the holder at his hip and started shuffling the cards effortlessly.

"Of course, I could teach you how to duel..."

Harry's smile slipped to a look of mild disbelief and confusion with a little bit of "are you right in the head?" mixed in too.

"I'm really not good with swords, and I can't see how throwing cards at each other would be in any way fun."

Despite what he said, something about the cards caught his attention. He couldn't pinpoint what exactly, but his gut was telling him they were more than just cards. Curious, Harry extended his magical senses seeing if he could pick anything up about them. What he felt was something he knew well. The touch of magic.

Slap. Slap. Slap. Hm, Harry might have noticed that Juudai's shuffling had slowed right down, and that he had begun slapping the cards together loudly as he cut and settled, cut and settled. Juudai's smile has gotten slightly more prickly, too.

{ I changed my mind, Yubel said grimly. Get him to play and soundly defeat him. }

( Juudai is really, really sick of people telling him what is and isn't effective, or truly dangerous, or fun. )

"Aw, come on," he said, that slightly-too-sharp smile widening a little and his cards fluttering loudly in his hands all the while. "You never know unless you try something new, right?"
