Meh. I was only ever a member of SD because it was occasionally interesting. The comms that have sprung up after are even less appealing.

I still feel the loss of the simple size of S_D 1.0 and all the wonderful material that was posted and archived over the years. The new communities haven't really produced the level of meta analysis that I miss from the old S_D. There's occasionally good stuff to be found, but it's mostly "here, have four pages from War of Kings #2," and not much else. However, S_D 2.0 DID turn me on to the Captain Raptor books, and that alone makes it worthwhile.

It makes me sad every time I see a link to the old SD and see that "deleted" screen. It's amazing how many blogs, lj's, facebook conversations, and emails I have that reference a set of scans on old SD, or some comments on there, or even just a commentary post. It's truly a chunk of history that's been lost to us.

...I dunno, am I missing something here? 'Cause the post you linked kind of reads as "Shit, guys! We finally noticed somebody dumped radioactive waste all over our community the other day, and in a demonstration of epic failure to get the point, we shook our modly fingers at the people trying to clean it up. So this is what we're doing to try and prevent that kind of shit from happening again, and in the meantime, wear lead suits."

Yes, there's an apology and "mea culpa" in that post by the mod(s). The problem is the inherent contradiction in their endless threading last week about how yes, NS_D is an anti-racist/sexist/homophobia/ablist comm and we'll figure out a way to make it so! Then today we get an admission of "well, no, it's not a safe space, SRY2SAY."

I do, however, give them points for at least being finally honest about the fact that they don't seem to have the ability or patience to make it a safe space. Now people know whether or not it's a safe space - at least that's clear.

There's still also a great deal of ambiguity, as I said above, as to how discussions about various isms should proceed. That leaves plenty of room for arbitrary modding without consistency.

Granted that I haven't seen the original comments you describe, and therefore am speaking from a position of ignorance, the first explanation that occurs to me for that contradiction is: since making those comments they have figured out they can't, or don't know how to, do the safe-space-making job properly.

I think what rabican skalja is saying is that Scans Daily can't ensure that discriminatory comments won't be made, which is what a safe space can. The mods are actively encouraging calling people on prejudiced bs, in order to make it a safer space, but they can't promise they won't be made. Personal attacks are against the rule, and I'd imagine something that targeted you personally such as a racist comment would count.

Well, there's also the subtext of 'safe spaces' which are essentially capable of completely denying access to people who threaten the highlighted minorities or interest groups. For better or for worse, SD2.0 and noscans_daily seem to have decided they like being the "general" comm for comics discussion, rather than the minority-safe one.

I can't say that I'd rather they go one way or the other. but I agree that you can't be a general comics forum and also provide a safe space for any minority or identity group, because privilige and bigotry do in fact exist, and comics fandom, small as it is, still has a mainstream, and you can't have it without accepting this. Providing a safe space within any fandom would mean banning a fair number of people, and SD 2.0 is apparently meant to embrace wider fandoms, rather than be a girl-run slash community(which might have a chance at running a safe space).
